For the more traditional readers, we will be doing a preview of All State teams by classifications too. While most VHSL All State teams have two teams with 8 players on each, we have decided to simply list some of the players we expect to be on the team at the end of the season.
With that being said, here’s a look at part two of our picks for VHSL Class 6 All State candidates, looking at six players we expect to be in the conversation.
James McIntyre James McIntyre 6'0" | CG Washington-Liberty | 2023 State VA | 6’3” WG | Washington-Liberty 2023
McIntyre was a Second Team All State selection last season, leading Washington-Liberty to an 18-8 record and a Regional Championship before falling to state champs Hayfield in the state tournament. His bread and butter is his ability to shoot it as he has deep range and can create separation and make shots from deep, he’s pretty slick off the bounce and knows how to get to spots and he’s a confident scorer who can make shots from all over.
Teyvien Barbour Teyvien Barbour 6'5" | SG Patriot (VA) | 2024 State #298 Nation VA | 6’5” WG | Osbourn 2024
Barbour is one of the fastest rising stars in the state of VA, as he’s starting to pick up offers and interest from division one schools of all levels, and he leads an Osbourn team that could surprise a lot of people this year. At 6’5” he has fantastic size on the wing and is able to play and guard multiple positions at this level, he’s a dead eye shooter with NBA range and he can get hot quickly and knock down shots in a row and he’s able to use his size to his advantage posting up smaller wings and scoring on the block too.
Tavarres Riley Tavarres Riley 6'1" | PG Freedom-Woodbridge | 2024 State VA | 6’1” PG | Freedom-Woodbridge 2024
Riley is one of the most talented guards in the state regardless of class, and he’s part of a Freedom backcourt that is one of the best in the state. He’s a quick guard who is shifty off the bounce and is able to get in the lane to make plays for himself and others, he can score the ball in a number of ways and has great balance and footwork to make contested shots and he has takeover ability as a scorer when he gets it going.
Kareem Stagg Kareem Stagg 6'8" | PF IMG | 2025 State #399 Nation FL | 6’8” PF | Oscar Smith 2025
While the VHSL All State teams don’t usually include underclassmen, there’s a number of very talented young players in Class 6 that should have big sophomore seasons, and Stagg has shown this summer and fall that he’s ready to be one of the best players in the 757. At 6’8” he moves like a wing and is an explosive leaper with good timing as a shot blocker, he can run the floor and catch and finish above the rim or hit the offensive glass and he’s improved immensely in his touch around the rim and out to the three-point line.
Nate Ament Nate Ament 6'8" | SF Highland | 2025 State #12 Nation VA | 6’7” PF | Colgan 2025
Ament is another sophomore coming off of a big summer and he’s going to be the go-to guy for Colgan this year and with his mismatch ability I could easily see him putting up big numbers this season. The 6’7” forward is excellent on the perimeter as he can knock down shots from deep with a quick release and consistency, he can rebound the ball and start the break with his ability to handle the ball and he can use his length to finish around the rim and rebound as well.
Jordan Scott Jordan Scott 6'7" | SG South Lakes | 2025 State #130 Nation VA | 6’4” WG | South Lakes 2025
Scott is yet another sophomore who I expect to have a breakout season, as he has the ability and tools to go for big numbers on any given night. The 6’4” wing has an all-around skillset that allows him to create and make shots from all over the floor, he has the ability to get hot and take over games with his shooting from deep and finishing ability around the rim and he’s a good rebounder for his position as well.
