It was a day to remember the life of Nick Herrmann and to honor him with what he loved the most: good basketball.

Gamepoint Basketball and Torrey Pines High School organized the six-game event, which featured 12 of the top basketball teams from the San Diego/ Southwest Riverside County region.

In the showcase's featured nightcap, [player_tooltip player_id='1069091' first='Mikey' last='Williams'] dazzled en route to an event-high 42 points in a close win over Carlsbad. He is joined by my other picks for the showcase's Top 5 performances.

[player_tooltip player_id='1069091' first='Mikey' last='Williams'], 6-3 2023 G, San Ysidro

Williams 42-point performance was the highlight of the night. He opened scoring threes off the catch and progressed to scoring triples off the bounce, then drives through contact around the rim. He sealed the game in the final minutes with several drives through contact that led to three-point plays.

[player_tooltip player_id='1630639' first='Jake' last='Hall'], 6-3 2025 G, Carlsbad

The 6-3 shooting guard was hitting shots from deep in the half court to keep the Lancers ahead and in the game for nearly both halves. He's automatic when his feet are set, and also has excellent body control and strength in transition, where he can finish through contact.

Michael McNair, 6-5 2023 G, Linfield Christian

McNair was dominant on both ends in the Lions win over Torrey Pines. Offensively, he's at his best moving without the ball into the gaps of the defense, cutting, catching and finishing around the basket, or sprinting to spots in the midrange and three and hitting shots off the catch, or unselfishly makes the pass to open teammates on the perimeter. He had perhaps the play of the night in transition where he caught a ball and delivered a poster dunk on the drop step. Defensively, his length and quickness in Linfield's trapping defense lead to live-ball turnovers that they quickly convert into points.

[player_tooltip player_id='1477693' first='Anthony' last='Aruffo'], 6-1 2023 G, La Jolla Country Day

Aruffo struck quickly for the Torreys, scoring 11 points in a span of 2 minutes to set the tone in the upset win over LCC. Aruffo is a streaky perimeter shooter, but is becoming more consistent over the past 6 months. If he hits one, he will usually follow up with several in a row, from deep and midrange. Aruffo's ability to finish with either hand off the bounce has also improved entering his final season.

Charlie Hutchison, 6-7 2024 WF, Mission Bay

The 6-7 "point forward" made plays both with the pass and scoring, but it was his effort on the boards and as a rim protector that helped anchor the Bucs defense in the 54-49 win. Hutchison had a highlight play where he sprinted in transition to block a shot, then sprinted back and positioned himself on the break to score on a layup. His ability to initiate the offense and move the ball with the pass helps create open looks for his rapidly-improving teammates.
