Here are five guys I’ve tabbed as high-potential players entering their sophomore seasons who could eventually be “the guy” on their future teams.
The lefty out of Renton is a quick guard with an easy stroke from behind the arc. He uses the jab and fakes from the triple threat well to move defenders and explodes to the hoop when he sees a lane. He understands pace and sees the court well. Johnson is long for his size too and could be a big part of a Renton team that could make a run out of the 2A KingCo.
I don’t expect to see a ton of Webb with the Varsity squad given the amount of talent and depth at O’Dea this season. However, Webb has shown he’s a strong and reliable finisher at the rim with those long arms and can factor in on the boards as well. He’s got the potential to be an extremely versatile player, handling the ball with good vision, showing promise on the defensive end, and popping off from deep at times with a nice looking stroke. Expect Webb to really come on to the scene next spring and have a breakout 2023-24.
Highlights
Misra is a polished player who saw minutes for Seattle Prep last season as they played crucial games in the state tournament. He handles the ball well and prods the defense looking for driving lanes. He’s got plenty of moves with the ball and has a nice jumper pulling up from the mid-range. He has a chance to carve out a nice role at Prep this season and already has the mindset to compete for the ultimate goal.
Highlights
Vanvoorhis is a wiry little guard who plays with reckless abandon. He’s always looking to push the ball and knifes through defenders without a thought as to where he’ll come down. He’s a nice finisher at the rim and makes some highlight plays passing as well. He should have a route to a complimentary guard role at Camas this season and has the ability to explode scoring the ball. In order to be at his best, he has to play a bit more controlled and limit the mistakes, but Vanvoorhis is an exciting player to watch going forward.
Schow is a big body who’s physically solid but still maintains fluidity and nice ball skills. He naturally plays tough around the rim, snagging boards and finishing with strong takes. He is a true wing player who can beat guys off the dribble and power through defenders at the hoop. I like that he doesn’t shy away from attacking the defense, he goes right at defenders and forces them to make plays. His length and strength make him a tough guard and he has a solid foundation going forward.
