2021-2022 RESULTS
The common theme in this previews when we talk about and break down the east side in Class 6A from last season is how deep it was. Broken Arrow was one of the best teams in Class 6A, but because of how deep their conference was, they were left on the outside looking in on the state tournament. This is a Broken Arrow team that only had one loss to in-state competition going into the last week of January. A three-game skid with losses to Booker T Washington, Jenks and Owasso would cost the Tigers a chance at hosting during the regional round.
Despite losing to Owasso 60-42 on February 1st, the Tigers would knock off the Rams 57-47 to capture that regional and be one win away from the state tournament. However, the following week, they were bounced out of the playoffs after back to back losses to Booker T Washington and Jenks. The Tigers were led by 2022 star guard Anthony Allen, who ended up being one of the best players in the state at the guard position. He was a highlight reel waiting to happen on any given night. They also saw the emergence of 2023 forward Connor Dow Connor Dow 6'6" | SF Broken Arrow | 2023 State #252 Nation OK , who has become one of the top prospects in his class. With the Tigers missing out on the state tourney a season ago, the Tigers have some unfinished business coming into this season.
2022-2023 OUTLOOK
While the east side in Class 6A ended up being somewhat of a gauntlet in the Frontier Conference last season, it looks to be wide open this year. From all the different preseason questionnaires we’ve received from 6A coaches, it appears that many believe Broken Arrow is ready to take the crown for the top team on the east side. The Tigers bring back three starters from last year’s team and plenty of experience from some of those new faces that will be stepping into the starting lineup. This is a Broken Arrow team that is senior-heavy but head coach Beau Wallace expects some younger players to step up and earn some playing time.
The schedule will once again be a tough one as the Frontier Conference will have several teams fighting for state tournament spots in March. The Tigers will also be challenged by tournaments at Bishop Kelley and Shawnee. A big reason the Tigers are one of the favorites on the east side is the return of Dow, an Oklahoma State commit. Dow leads a Broken Arrow team that has some serious size and will give opponents some problems this season with all their length they can throw out there on any given night. Dow enjoyed a breakout season last year, we’re looking forward to seeing who enjoys a breakout season this winter.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Senior forward Connor Dow Connor Dow 6’6″ | SF Broken Arrow | 2023 State #252 Nation OK has to be on the short list for 2023 prospects that have risen their stock the most in the last 12 months. Dow had a strong junior season but it’s what he did this offseason that made him one of the top prospects in this 2023 class. Dow became an elite shooter and showcased that time after time while playing for Team Griffin against top competition in the country. It’s going to be very interesting to see how his game translates this winter with Anthony Allen gone and Dow not only having more of a role within the offense, but a much bigger target each and every night the Tigers go out there.
One player that we’re really interested in seeing this winter is Broken Arrow sophomore guard David Howell David Howell 6’4″ | PG Broken Arrow | 2025 State #329 Nation OK . On a team full of seniors and juniors, Howell cracked the starting lineup last year as a freshman. Based on some of his averages, Howell has the chance to be a big impact player and step into that athletic guard role that the Tigers lost with Allen graduating. And with a lot of the attention going to some of the seniors in the Tiger lineup, we expect Howell to have a breakout season from the guard position. He’s unique blend of athleticism, size and skills make him a very interesting prospect to watch this winter.
Another player that took a positive step last season was senior forward Ethan Ellison Ethan Ellison 6’6″ | PF Broken Arrow | 2023 State OK . He’s Broken Arrow’s second leading returning scorer from last season’s team and it’s not a bold prediction to think that Ellison’s production is going to go up and he could end up averaging in double figures this season. Like Dow, Ellison provides the Tigers some size and while Dow is more of a shooter, Ellison does the most of his damage 15 feet and in. We mentioned how the Tigers were going to have plenty of length and versatility within their lineup and Ellison is just another example of that. He’s definitely going to be an important part of the Tigers potentially making a run.
