Continue ReadingWith the upcoming regular season approaching, now is a good time to break down city rankings across Albuquerque, Las Cruces, Rio Rancho and other cities in New Mexico. This will be part one of three in a series of articles focusing on players in Albuquerque. We’ll breakdown players ranked 15-11 in the ’23, ’24 and ’25 classes.
#11. Jonah Lopez Jonah Lopez 6'2" | SG Rio Grande | 2023 State NM had a breakout season last year for the Rio Grande Ravens as a junior in 2021-22. He averaged over 17 points per game and was one of the top 25 scorers in New Mexico last season. He was a near double-double player who averaged 9.1 rebounds per game which was 11th in New Mexico. He recorded 8 double-double last season and led the Rio Grande Ravens in the five main statistical categories (pts, rebs ,asts ,stls and blks). Jonah is a wing player that can play as a point-forward and can play multiple positions on the floor. He is most dangerous with the basketball in his hands and is an elite mid-range pull up shooter. Going into his senior season, Jonah Lopez Jonah Lopez 6'2" | SG Rio Grande | 2023 State NM is one of the top players in the community.
#12. Latavious Morris Latavious Morris 5'8" | PG Atrisco Heritage | 2025 State NM from Atrisco Heritage will be a player to keep your eyes on in Albuquerque. Last season as a freshman, Latavious made a huge impact for the Jaguars and was a key piece in their run to the 5A State Semifinals. He plays above the air and is a problem for defenses when he has the basketball. Latavious play will a lot of swagger and is crafty in how he scores down the floor. He is a scoring first point guard who makes a lot of his damage in transition by finishing around the rim and in the mid-range area.
#13. Brandon Lagunas from West Mesa had a breakout type of season for the Mustangs last year. He helped lead the Mustangs back to the 5A State Tournament. Throughout the offseason, Brandon showed he is one of the state’s top scorers. He can hold his own with anyone and uses his offensive package to his advantage. Brandon is a lethal three-point shooter who can score in the half court and transition. He has gotten stronger and played with a lot of confidence getting to the rim off the dribble. With the West Mesa Mustangs bringing everyone but two seniors back this season plus some transfers, expect Brandon to be the best player on one of the top contenders this season.
Highlights
#14. Andrew Hill from the Sandia Matadors is in store to have a big year this upcoming season. He is a crafty left-handed player who runs the point guard position really well. Andrew can play either guard position as a combo guard and plays the game at a nice speed. He knows how to slither his way to the rim and finish around the basket. Andrew can play off the ball and spot up for “catch and shoot” jumpers as well. He has nice footwork and a nice step back jumper from outside the arc.
#15. Dalen Moyer Dalen Moyer 6'0" | CG Sandia | 2023 State NM is an elite ball handler who can play either guard position. He is super smooth with the basketball in his hands and is a crafty guard around the basket. Dalen is a good and reliable three-point shooter who can space the floor. He can create his own shot for himself and others. Dalen is a solid playmaker and passer on the floor. He is an underrated finisher around the rim.
