Combo guards are some of the most versatile players in Louisiana. They can fill in at the point or play off the ball at the shooting guard. These players are also some of the better defenders on their respective teams. With the season starting, there are a ton of combo guards to watch around the state. In this PHLA exclusive, we will look at several combo guards to watch during the season.

[player_tooltip player_id='1213623' first='Derwin' last='Ancar'] (6'2" / Phoenix)

Ancar is one of the more explosive guards in the Boot. He is a player who can elevate and finish through contact and at times over the defense. Because of the attention he commands, his assist totals should elevate this season. His offensive game may lead him to a most outstanding player award at the end of the year.

[player_tooltip player_id='1480389' first='Dashawn' last='Ceaser'] (6'2" / Iowa)

Ceasar showed during the summer that he is a guard who can fill multiple roles. He is a tenacious defender who has quick hands and creates turnovers. When on offense, he is very good at spotting up behind the arc and penetrating to find others. Ceasar is a threat with or without the ball which is a good thing for Iowa.

[player_tooltip player_id='1105539' first='Javon' last='Johnson'] (6'1" / Bossier)

No prep shoots the corner three better than [player_tooltip player_id='1105539' first='Javon' last='Johnson']. He has had so much practice running to that spot where it has now become second nature. During the summer, he got a chance to handle the ball a little more and showed that he is a capable playmaker as well. If Johnson meshes both worlds well, watch out.

[player_tooltip player_id='1105543' first='Krystian' last='Lewis'] (6'2" / Wossman)

There is a reason that Lewis became a starter a month into last season. He is a guard with a quick first step and gets to the rim in a hurry. Lewis is also an aggressive defender who generates tips and steals for himself and others. His two way ability and along with his skill to make plays for others in the half court makes him very valuable.

[player_tooltip player_id='970120' first='Chris' last='Lockett'] (6'5" / Newman)

Lockett may not put up the most gaudy numbers during his time at Newman. However, what he can do is score in bunches and make others better. Lockett draws a ton of attention which helps him get others into the game. He can post, shoot, and facilitate which makes him probably the most dangerous player on the floor.

[player_tooltip player_id='1578873' first='Jaylen' last='Pazon'] (6'4" / Mandeville)

Pazon looked like he improved every time I saw him during the summer. He is a lefty guard who is transitioning to a primary ballhandler and he is making the transition well. Pazon can get into the lane and score or pass and he showed more consistency from outside. His height and length will make him a terror this season.

[player_tooltip player_id='1347266' first='Preston' last='Sanders'] (6'0" / Zwolle)

Sanders is a sophomore who will make a difference for the Zwolle Hawks on both ends of the floor. He attacks the rim with aggression and he defends the same way. Sanders is like a one man fast break in the open floor and makes plays for himself and others. His style of play will be crucial for the Hawks this season.

[player_tooltip player_id='1213624' first='Reece' last='Seicshnaydre'] (6'2" / St. Paul's)

Seicshnaydre may be one of the most underrated playmakers we have in Louisiana. He displayed the ability all summer to break down his initial defender to get his own shot or create one for a teammate. His outside jumper is very consistent and he will finish over defenders in the lane. Seicshnaydre is a guard who can do it all offensively.

[player_tooltip player_id='970119' first='De'kaveon' last='Taylor'] (6'3" / Huntington)

Taylor has become a true Swiss army knife over the past two seasons. He got more experience at the point during the 2021 summer and has continued to improve his game. Taylor is a two way stalwart. He is a lock down defender who can shoot the three or facilitate the offense. His all-around play will be imperative for the Raiders success.

[player_tooltip player_id='970138' first='Warren' last='Young'] (6'1" / Walker)

Young can put the ball in the hole. He is a three level scorer who can get big numbers in a hurry when he is hot. Young is also very good at running the show and is capable of making others better. When he has the combination of scoring and facilitating going, Walker is one hard team to stop.

All of the guards above will have a chance to be all-state and all-district performers. They will all begin the quest to reach those goals with scrimmages later this month.

Combo guards are some of the most versatile players in Louisiana. They can fill in at the point or play off the ball at the shooting guard. These players are also some of the better defenders on their respective teams. With the season starting, there are a ton of combo guards to watch around the state.
