There are many things that the month of September means – the gradual dropping of the temperatures, fall foliage occurring in various portions of the country and the beginning of Top 250 season across the country.
With the tip-off of the regular season around the corner, the annual Prep Hoops event provides one more opportunity at a late-offseason tune-up before play begins for real. South Carolina’s was one of the first Top 250 events this season and it returned to John T. Rhodes Sports Center in Myrtle Beach with participants sorted into 12 teams.
Here is a look at the scoring GameChangers from Sunday on the Grand Strand.
Bowden is a two-sport athlete who has also spent time on the Bruins’ junior varsity football team in addition to what he gets accomplished as a basketball player. His play also contributed to the 4A Bruins reaching the 20-win plateau for the first time since 2011-12. He is listed at 5-foot-9 and has a midrange jump shot as part of his overall offensive repertoire. Bowden also places a lot of emphasis on taking care of the ball as well as being an unselfish player who keeps his teammates involved in the ebbs and flows of a game.
SCISA’s reclassification was one of the big offseason stories for high school sports across South Carolina and Wilkins‘ Knights were one of the teams affected as Oakbrook Prep will move from 2A to 3A this coming season. Listed at 6-foot-3, Wilkins primarily plays as a two guard he will get near the rim to complete plays and will use the backboard to sink her jumpers if necessary. He also poses problems for opposing teams with his defensive skills and is an effective rebounder. Many of the plays Wilkins can deliver for his team also occur in critical moments of games.
Sanders is already busy this fall semester athletically given how he wears both basketball sneakers and football cleats. Sanders is listed at 6-foot-2 and is effective defensively as a shot blocker. He understands how to throw defenders off balance when he has the ball in his hands as they do not know if he will attack or dish the rock out to an open teammate. Sanders can turn offensive rebounds into two-point putbacks and get crafty with how he finishes at the rim with the occasional reverse layup. The Auctioneers should be one of the teams to watch in 2A play this upcoming season.
