The event featured many of the top players from the class of 2023 and allowed them the opportunity to participate in several drill stations and culminating with 5-on-5 scrimmages. I was able to attend the event and here’s a look at some of the top standouts I saw.
1. Drew Mata – Schurr
Mata is a sold shooting 4/5 who spaces the floor and spots up well in the corners. Good catch and shoot player. He’s able to attack closeouts well and can put the ball on the floor and get to the rim when defenders run him off the three-point line. He can also hold position in the paint against smaller defenders and post up for easy twos. He has good size and length and runs the floor well on the break. Can handle the ball a little bit. Good rebounder.
2. Troy Jones – Narbonne
Jones is a quick little guard who pushes the pace in transition. He can hit the pull-up jumper on the break. He’s comfortable with the ball in his hands and creating his own shot. Although he is a smaller guard, he doesn’t have a problem getting his shot off over taller defenders. Steps in to his three-point shot well and he can shoot against defenders running at him. In the halfcourt he can pull-up and hit the midrange jumper.
3.
Sean Oliver

– Long Beach Wilson
Oliver is an athletic wing who can finish well through traffic. Off the ball, Oliver runs the floor well in transition. He fills the lanes and can finish on the break. Good hands. In the halfcourt, he looked comfortable putting the ball on the floor and creating shots as well as slashing to the rim. Uses his frame to finish well around the basket. Capable shooter from distance.
4. Nathan Padilla – Vista Murrieta
Padilla was one of the event’s top shooters. He has unlimited range and he can let the ball fly. He’s quick and moves well off ball to free himself up on the perimeter. He has a very quick release and gets his shot off before the defense closes out. Relocates after the pass and is a solid shooter off the catch. On the break, he floats out to the wing and spots up from the arc. Very smooth jumper. He also uses jabs to create space to get off his shot if closely guarded.
5. Frank Chambers – Long Beach Jordan
Chambers is a do-it-all type wing. He can handle the ball and he is able to create a shot for himself or in the halfcourt he can find the open teammate. Good slasher who can get past his defender without a screen and can finish at the basket off of drives. He has consistent range out to the three-point line and is a good catch and shoot player.
