Although most teams are missing pieces this time of the year due to players participating in fall sports, this is a good opportunity to get a very early look of what upcoming team may look like along with the future of the program. This open gym report comes out of the 9th region, the Newport Wildcats.
Miller has a college ready body. Physical driver and plays with a high motor. Capable 3pt range off the catch when his feet are set. Very good mid-range game off of one and two dribbles elevating to shoot. At his best using his toughness, athleticism and strength driving to the paint and scoring. Showed an extreme level of competitiveness. Miller will be undoubtedly one of the toughest players to guard in the state this season and will look to build off of his 15.4 PPG last season.
Kinney plays way beyond his years. As the primary ball handler, he does an unbelievable job staying composed and changing speeds. He never seemed to get sped up and had great court awareness. Has a good looking shot, missed a good amount but none were bad misses. Showcased the ability to come off a ball screen and score at all 3 levels. Has good touch on floaters & at the rim. Did a good job of getting everyone involved. Still very young, but will be an exciting prospect as he gets older and stronger. Has a chance to be one of the better players to come out of the state in a while.
Turner is a very intriguing prospect. Very athletic, fluid athlete, elite length and looks to still be growing. Has a good jumper and can step out to 3pt range. Great in transition running the floor and finishing above the rim. As he continues to grow, will probably be a PF at the next level. Being so young, you can tell he is still trying to figure it all out with his size and moving around the court. When he does, he could be the best player in the state at some point during his high school career. Has all the tools.
Noah Silverton
Noah Silverton
Silverton I believe is the x-factor for the Wildcats this season. Plays with an extremely high motor, willing to make all the toughness plays and overall a solid player. Sneaky athlete that can play above the rim. Strong and physical driver. Contact doesn’t bother him. Good shooter off the catch outside the 3pt line. I could see Silverton playing a key part to the Wildcats success this year.
Dashawn Anderson
Dashawn Anderson
Anderson has a ton of potential. Great athlete and has good strength for his size. Great at getting out in transition and slashing in the half court. Has the ability to be one of the best defenders in the region. Can get hot from 3pt. Made about 6 – 3’s in a two game span. Needs to shoot off the catch. Again, like most of the Wildcats, Anderson is still young. Will be an interesting prospect to follow throughout his high school as he has a very high ceiling.
Outlook: Newport will be one of the youngest teams in the state but will rarely play a game where they are out talented. It may take their young players some time, but having a veteran in Miller to carry the load early in the season to allow the younger guys to develop more, look for the Wildcats to be a sleeper to make it out of the 9th Region this season.
