With the high school season right around the corner, we've had quite a few news in the high school transfer wire throughout the state of VA, so we thought it would be a good time to mention a few. Today, we'll take a look at part one of the players transferring in or within of the state of VA and what they bring to their new team.

[player_tooltip player_id='1117680' first='Josh' last='Hughes'] | 6'6” C 2023

Previous School: Benedictine

New School: Varina

Hughes moves to Varina from Benedictine where he spent the last few years and he's part of a number of transfers who move to the Blue Devils after they won a state championship last season. The 6'6” big man brings a toughness in the paint as he can rebound and protect the rim, he has good hands and feet to be able to seal and finish and he plays with a great motor and does all the dirty work for his team.

[player_tooltip player_id='999645' first='Patrick' last='O'Brien'] | 6'8” PF 2023

Previous School: Highland School

New School: Bishop O'Connell

O'Brien joins an O'Connell team that had a mass exodus after a few years at Highland School and the exit of coach BJ Hooker, and in his time at Highland O'Brien has seen a complete change in his game developing from a back to the basket big to a versatile big who can play inside-out. He moves so much better now that he's grown into his body and he can work on the perimeter to come off screens and knock down shots, he can put it on the deck and get downhill where he's an explosive finisher above the rim and he can still post up and rebound in the paint for extra possessions too.

[player_tooltip player_id='1241905' first='Corey' last='Caulker'] | 5'11” PG 2023

Previous School: Fairfax Christian

New School: Bishop O'Connell

Caulker moves to O'Connell from Fairfax Christian where he helped them win a VISAA D3 state championship, and he's in a very intriguing role as he shares the backcourt with three very young but talented players and his experience will be important in both helping them develop and keeping his team in control. He's a true floor general who controls the tempo and gets his team into sets, he can touch the paint and makes plays for others and he can knock down shots from deep with deep range when he's left open.

[player_tooltip player_id='999618' first='Steven' last='Stinson'] | 6'4” F 2023

Previous School: John Marshall

New School: Varina

Stinson transfers from John Marshall where he won a Class 2 state championship to the reigning Class 4 state champions in Varina and he brings a versatile hybrid forward kind of game that the Blue Devils have had a lot of success with over the past few years. He's a very strong forward who can get downhill and use his size to finish through traffic, he rebounds very well for his size on both ends of the floor and he brings a high motor and hustle style of play that helps his team in positive ways on both ends of the floor.

[player_tooltip player_id='1232157' first='CJ' last='McPherson'] | 6'3” WG 2023

Previous School: Norfolk Collegiate

New School: Catholic

McPherson was a breakout player for NoCo last season, and now he moves to defending TCIS Champions who are stacked with young talent and he'll fit a need they have in that he's a knock down shooter who can defend as well. At 6'3” he's a strong wing who can keep ball handlers in front and rebounds well for his position, he's a good shooter from deep and can hit the midrange pull-up as well and he can get to the rim and use his size to finish through traffic as well.
