The twelve court facility at Lakepoint Champions Center had wall-to-wall action which included everything from tight contests to great individual performances. There were some players who fit into each one of these categories if not both during the two days of competition. We will take a look at a few of those players here in this review of the first two days at session III of the Under Armour Association.
Antron Mason II Antron Mason II 6'1" | CG Wossman | 2025 State LA (6’0″ | Wossman/AAO Flight 15U | 2025)
Mason was the quintessential scoring point guard for Flight during their two victories I witnessed. He was excellent at directing traffic when the ball was in his hands and made some passes that were on the money in transition. All his teammate had to do was lay it up. Mason also shot the ball well from three which helped his team tremendously.
Jayce Depron Jayce Depron 7'5" | CG Madison Prep | 2024 State LA (6’3″ | Madison Prep/LA Elite 16U | 2024)
Depron had his catch-and-shoot ability on full display shooting the ball extremely well from three during pool play. While his long range jumper was working, Depron displayed the other parts of his game as well. He was excellent at driving to the rim with either hand and finishing. Depron also took plenty of hits during penetration and made teams pay at the charity stripe also. Depron showed that he is more than just an athletic specimen and has a maturing all-around floor game.
Decedric Webb Decedric Webb 6'5" | SF Huntington | 2023 State LA (6’5″ | Huntington/LA Elite 17U | 2023)
Webb was the best player the first two days for LA Elite. He put extreme pressure on each defense with straight line drives and proved he could finish at or above the rim. His ability to switch onto guards and bigs was paramount in the defensive effort of LA Elite as well. Webb’s versatility and how hard he competed on both ends were part of what made him attractive to coaches this weekend.
Dorian Booker Dorian Booker 6'10" | PF Scotlandville | 2023 State LA (6’10″ | Scotlandville/LA Elite 17U | 2024)
Booker was as solid as they come in the post when he got opportunities. His comfort on the right block was apparent as he scored time and time again from that block. The lefty also created space when smaller defenders drove allowing him to block several attempts at the rim. Once he caught the ball in the paint, he either scored or got fouled. He still has some growing to do but he is well on his way to becoming a very good inside presence.
Chilaydrien Newton Chilaydrien Newton 6'3" | PG Simsboro | 2023 UT (6’3″ | Simsboro/TX Impact 4:13 | 2023)
Before he drove the length of the floor to make the game winning bucket, Newton found himself orchestrating the Texas Impact team only as he knew how. He was aggressive attacking the rim and his change of direction with the dribble was elite level stuff. His range from behind the arc also showed that he can make things happen on or off the ball. Newton is a combo guard who is definitely starting to turn heads.
Non-Louisiana players who impressed:
Blue Cain Blue Cain 6'4" | SG IMG Academy | 2023 State #102 Nation FL (6’4″ | Knoxville Catholic/B.Maze Elite | 2023)
Cain can put it on the deck and shoot it well from deep. He is more than a catch-and-shoot guard. Cain can score in multiple ways and was paramount to the B.Maze success.
Christopher Cherry (5’10″ | Austin-East Magnet/B. Maze Elite | 2024)
Super athletic point who has quick hands and defends well on the perimeter. His ability to change ends in transition is something special. Cherry had some impressive dunks during the first two days.
Vasean Allette (6’4″ | United Scholastic Academy/Canada Elite | 2023)
Guard who is a freight train in transition. Pushes the ball well and finishes well through contact. Can score at all three levels.
Alassane Amadou (6’9″ | Springside Chestnut Hill Academy/Philly Pride | 2023)
Long, athletic forward who can guard multiple positions. He can step out and shoot the three and likes to attack from the wings. Hard to stop from attacking the offensive boards
Brayln Smith (6’5″ | Turning Point Christian/TX Impact 4:13 | 2023)
Can defend all wing positions and is a tenacious man-to-man defender. He is a three level scorer who is relentless at attacking the rim. Smith is either going to finish the play or get fouled.
Aaron Perez Aaron Perez 6'4" | SG Klein Collins | 2024 State TX (6’3″ | Klein Collins/ Houston Defenders | 2024)
Dead-eye shooter who does his preparation early. Moves well off screens and knows how to read screens well. Definitely a “3 & D” type player.
Efeosa Oliogu (6’6″ | United Scholastic Academy/Canada Elite | 2024)
Athletic forward with a strong upper body. He can score from multiple levels and is a high flyer in transition. Punishes the rim when he finishes.
The UAA championship competition concludes on June 9th with champions being named in all divisions.
