Alex Calcaterra Alex Calcaterra 6'3" | SF Boyne City | 2023 State MI 6-3 2023 Boyne City Not a new name but did slip between the cracks on my extensive day 1 review. But there is nothing between the cracks about this scoring guards game. Is an explosive and decisive penetrator. Good enough athlete to finish through contact. But it’s not all bully ball. Is a crafty and creative finisher around the rim. Powerful jumper off of two feet and has the ability to hang in the air. Like a lot of the players in the camp. Is a coaches son and plays like it. Has the game and athletic upside to work his way onto some recruiting boards with a big senior season.
Lincoln Hicks 6-0 2024 Manton Athletic point guard who looked very comfortable playing on his own court. Matched up often with AAU teammate Johnny Ingalls Johnny Ingalls 5'11" | PG St. Ignace | 2024 State MI in position groupings. Has similar game in a slightly bigger frame. Good driver and long strider who gets to the rim quickly. Also features an effective jab step/step back combo. Played more of a complementary role last year. Next step will be developing his outside shot and becoming a focal point of the Ranger offense.
Drew Kelsey 6-3 2023 Montabella What a difference a year makes. At last years event. Kelsey competed hard. But at times seemed overmatched. This year was aggressive and assertive throughout the event. Really excelled in the 3-on-3 portion of the camp. It seems minor but showed big hands. Began many of his drives by palming the ball one handed above his defender. Wasn’t just show. Was strong with the ball on drives and was able to adjust placement in mid air. Also showed range on the perimeter and was a good three point shooter. Has been active on the grassroots scene with REAL basketball out of the Mount Pleasant area.
Ashtyn Simerson 5-10 2023 Mesick Like Hicks, an explosive point guard playing close to home. Simerson was one of the better ball handlers in the camp. Teamed with Kelsey to form a dynamic duo in the 3-on-3 portion of the camp. Good drive and dish game. First option was to pass off creative drives. Also adept at operating in pick and roll opportunities. Showed the type of leadership you would expect coming from a point guard of an undefeated regular season squad. Not very big but plays with a lot of moxie. Mesick loses a lot from last years standout unit. His statistical and corresponding recruiting profile could really take off in his senior season.
Jacob McRee 6-4 2025 Mesick With his age, height and outside shooting touch could have passed as a triplet for the Cull twins who I wrote about from day 1. I caught him in the regular season playing off the bench. The physical upside was apparent. Even more intrigued with his long term potential after watching him in this setting. Has an extremely confident and smooth release from beyond the arc. Well schooled footwork both on the perimeter and near the basket. Never appears to be rushed. Which is rare for such a young prospect. Competed hard in the post group setting against some bigger and much older players. Although he is young. He is bit of a tweener right now. Not quite big enough to be a true post. But not a true wing at this point of his development either. Has plenty of time to sort that out. Should form a nice 1-2 punch with Simerson for the Bulldogs in the upcoming season.
