So today we will review the Pennsylvania Class of 2023 rankings and reveal five players who used the 2022 spring grassroots circuit to make an impression and break into our ranking for the first time.
Below is a review of five southeastern Pennsylvania 2023 prospects who made their rankings debut in our latest update.
201… Ernest Shelton Ernest Shelton 6'3" | CG Father Judge | 2023 State PA – 6’3” / Father Judge / Philly Pride Select / Combo Guard: Shelton is widely considered an elite long-range shooter (42% on 3PAs during 2021-22 season) and he furthered enhanced that reputation on the spring grassroots circuit. But he also showed a more well-rounded skill set and that is what thrust him into our latest rankings. After solid runs in April, Shelton had a breakout performance in May at the Big Shots- Philly Pride Tournament. In addition to his elite shooting, Shelton displayed improved handles, the ability to get to his mid-range spots, better court vision and tireless off ball movement.
247…Maki Pettigrew – 6’0” / SLA at Beeber / SK Elite 17 / Combo Guard: Pettigrew used an outstanding weekend at the HG Southern Jam Fest (VA) as a launching pad for a breakout spring that grabbed our attention. Over his last three tourneys, Pettigrew averaged 9 points, 4 rebounds and 2 steals per contest. This versatile backcourt prospect possesses a quick first step and elusive handles. Those assets allow him to serve as a primary ball handler and navigate through a defense for a bucket in the mid-range or at the cup. Additionally, Pettigrew is a solid facilitator off the dribble drive. At the shooting guard spot, Pettigrew can slash to the basket for a catch and lay-in or knock home threes.
269…Karron Mallory – 6’0” / Northeastern / York Ballers / Combo Guard: Starting in early April at the Spring Showdown (NJ) and running through the ZGXL tournament (PA) in late May, Mallory proved he is a unique guard prospect. As a shooting guard, Mallory owns logo range and a quick trigger so opponents must guard him the second he comes over half-court. Still, his best fit on the court may be that of a distributing floor general. Mallory plays with poise, possesses tremendous court vision and an unselfish nature. When you combine those items with his tight handles, you get the makings of an excellent point guard. On the 2022 spring grassroots circuit Mallory posted a stat line of 15.3 points and 3.2 rebounds per game. Additionally, he drained 3.1 threes per contest. This spring Mallory proved to be a menacing defensive presence as well ( 2 spg.).
303… Seamus Rogers Seamus Rogers 6'2" | CG Archbishop Carroll | 2023 State PA – 6’2 / Archbishop Carroll / PSB Philly-Ferrick / Combo Guard: The first item that jumps out about this lefty is his college ready physique. Then as you watch Rodgers play, you realize that he is a gifted offensive talent as well. His mid-range pull up game is extremely impressive. Rodgers can also use his dribble drive to score at the rim or to distribute to teammates. Plus, Rodgers is a high percentage three-point shooter. On defense, Rodgers’ can use his speed and physicality to shut off the opponent’s best perimeter player for 94 feet.
332…
Sam Wright

– 6’1” / Lower Merion /
Philly Pride
302 / Shooting Guard: From the PIAA 6A state tournament to the end of May, Wright saw his recruiting stock climb sharply. His smooth “three and D” style of play is always on display. However, in the last two months Wright exhibited a significantly improved ability to attack the rim. Now when a defender chases Wright off the arc, he uses the dribble to get into the paint for a floater or lay-in. Wright’s increased ability to finish through contact is noteworthy as well. His non-stop motor and tremendous instincts enable Wright to be a factor in all phases of the game.
