Now that we’ve slid into the summer team-ball season, let’s take a look back at some Wichita guards who stood out in the spring:
Asa Ahmad, 5-foot-11 guard, 2024, Collegiate:
A shifty guard for the Wichita Padres, Ahmad showed he might be ready to take on a big role at Collegiate next year. He can penetrate and dish with good vision and body control. He’s not a big point guard, but he plays physical. He’s got quick hands and disrupts things at the defensive end.
Rayvelle Leak, 5-foot-11 guard, 2024, Wichita East:
Leak is a physical guard who abuses smaller opponents just like he does on the football field. He turns aggressive defense into easy offense, and he never stops attacking at either end. He plays with passion and energy. Leak drops the three-ball with regularity and he can also dribble into a pull-up jumper.
JaRon Lee, 5-foot-9 guard, 2024, Wichita Heights:
Lee is a highly active and tough point guard who handles the ball under pressure and penetrates through traffic and dishes off nice passes or gets to the goal. He doesn’t hog a lot of shots, but he’s an effective scorer from the point, dropping threes and scoring in the paint.
Andrew Martin Andrew Martin 6'2" Shawnee Mission East | 2023 KS , 6-foot guard, 2024, Kapaun Mt. Carmel (pictured):
The Wichita Padres boasted a lot of nice guards in the spring, and Martin was right in the thick of it, leading the team, handling the ball and getting it to the right places. He’s a fine ball handler who showed the ability to catch and shoot off picks from deep. He scores enough to be a real threat, but he also does a good job getting everyone involved.
Brooks Powers, 6-foot guard, 2024, Kapaun Mt. Carmel:
Powers is another weapon Kapaun can look forward to using next season. He’s a real crafty and smart guard who makes plays and shoots it well. He’s athletic and fit right in the up-tempo style of Oz Elite during the spring.
Jacob Wassall, 6-foot-1 guard, 2023, Wichita North:
A solid junior season for Wichita North propelled the long guard into a solid spring for the Wichita Padres. Wassall can really shoot it, but he does a lot of other things as well. He’s active on the boards and on the defensive end. He can handle the ball under pressure and attacks. He’s athletic and fast with the ball, pushing with his eyes up.
