Sheldon High School concluded its annual summer tournament on Sunday. 16 varsity teams were at Sheldon and Bushnell University to compete for the crown. We were able to check out the semifinals and finals on Sunday featuring Churchill, Sheldon, Grants Pass, and West Albany. Here are a few standouts from Sunday’s action:

[player_tooltip player_id="1484998" first="Mason" last="Bennett"] SF 6’4" Grants Pass 2023

Bennett is a big, strong, all around player for the Cavemen. He consistently showed a willingness to stick his nose in and do the dirty work on the glass and defensive end. Offensively, he is a good passer and showed flashes of finishing ability.

[player_tooltip player_id="1079532" first="Bugsy" last="Jensen"] (2023 Churchill)

Jensen has been a top player for the Lancers all spring and continued on Sunday afternoon. He is a defensive stopper for the perennial powerhouse. On the offensive end, he was shifty and finished at the rim consistently. He also showed great court vision and kicked the ball ahead in transition.

[player_tooltip player_id="1485831" first="Carsen" last="Luna"] G 6’2" Churchill 2023

The crafty guard had a breakout game in the semifinals vs Sheldon. Luna was able to create off the dribble both for his teammates and himself. Once he gets to the rim he creates contact and finishes well. Defensively, he was very active and disrupted passing lanes.

[player_tooltip player_id="1486143" first="Gavin" last="McLean"] SF Grants Pass 6’3" 2024

McLean was a driving force for the champion Cavemen. He showed a great handle and quick first step. He is a great slashing style finisher.

[player_tooltip player_id="1486144" first="Luke" last="Morgan"] SF 6’3" Grants Pass 2024

Morgan was a catalyst for the Cavemen all weekend. He plays a physical style that is typical of Grants Pass teams. He is a great athlete and showed fantastic bounce on an alley-oop finish in the final.

[player_tooltip player_id="1486145" first="Zach" last="Stapleton"] PG 5’9" Sheldon 2024

Stapleton has been a stalwart for Eric Orton’s program this spring. He rounds out an impressive Sheldon backcourt with [player_tooltip player_id="1110574" first="Owen" last="Cramer"] and [player_tooltip player_id="1368250" first="Rocco" last="Graziano"]. His ability to provide solid ball handling and basketball IQ was evident all weekend.

[player_tooltip player_id="1486146" first="Kamani" last="Winger"] PF 6’5" Sheldon 2024

The Sheldon big man showed some real flashes of what could come in the Southwest Conference this year. He consistently established deep post position against both Churchill and Grants Pass. His ability to track down offensive rebounds and convert is elite.
