Continue ReadingWhile much of the focus was on the high school varsity division, the Rose City Showcase still held its brackets for AAU squads and we got a chance to see the 17U and 16U finals, which were both captured by PDX Dynasty. Here’s a look at the top performers we saw from those squads.
Devon Malcolm, Dynasty 17U (2022 South Medford)
The powerful and athletic Malcolm did exactly what we’ve become accustomed to seeing him do, throw down some highlight reel dunks while also showing good motor on the boards and on the defensive end. He’s still in the process of determining where he’ll be playing college ball but recently picked up a scholarship offer from Sacramento State.
Donatello Tupper, Dynasty 17U (2022 Roosevelt)
Reunited with Malcolm – the played together last summer with the Oregon Prospects – Tupper had his share of high-flying dunks and showed us why he was one of the most dangerous finishers in transition this past season at Roosevelt. The 6-foot-4 swingman has verbally committed to Northeastern (CO) JC.
Jahvari Martino Jahvari Martino 6'0" | CG Barlow | 2023 State OR , Dynasty 17U (2023 Barlow)
Martino is an athletic combo guard who played earlier this spring with Team Fly. He was particularly effective with his pull-up jumper off the bounce and also got a number of easy scores in transition.
Donovan Ferguson Donovan Ferguson 5'10" | CG Jefferson | 2023 State OR , Dynasty 17U (2023 Jefferson)
Ferguson ranked third in 6A in steals last season and it wasn’t hard to see why – he’s a gnat around the basketball and sticks to his assignment like flypaper. Offensively he pushed the ball and got a handful of baskets on the break. He’s transferred to Jefferson for next season.
Scotty Riddle Scotty Riddle 6'0" | PG Gresham | 2023 State OR , Dynasty 17U (2023 Gresham)
A talented scorer, Riddle actually spent most of the 17U title game getting the ball to open teammates such as Malcolm and Tupper for their fast break jams. He did a good job handling the opposing team’s ball pressure with his nifty dribbling.
Cory Connor Cory Connor 6'3" | PG Prolific Prep (Napa CA) | 2024 WA , Dynasty 16U (2024 O’Dea)
An import from Seattle, Connor is a tremendous athlete who can really get to the basket and finish in a variety of ways. He could not be stopped from getting into the lane and converted his drives either with a floater or at the rim through contact. Connor knocked down several perimeter jumpers to keep the defenses honest as well.
Andre Niko, Dynasty 16U (2024 The Dalles)
Niko may be built like a linebacker – which is exactly what he plays on the football field – but is very light on his feet and runs the floor extremely well. The 6-foot-3 rising junior is a nice blend of power and finesse as he not only converted some very tough buckets in the paint but showed he could shoot a bit from the outside as well.
Mason Brierbrauer, Dynasty 16U (2025 Barlow)
Brierbauer played with Oregon Prospects 15U in the spring but suited up for Dynasty for the Rose City Showcase. We had seen the rising sophomore forward get his points in the paint previously but in the 16U finals he was lighting it up from the outside, including at least five threes. We are now thinking he’s more of a big wing at 6-foot-5 and really like his ceiling.
