Here were some of the standouts from the 17U division on Sunday which include some of the best shooters of the weekend and arguably the best athlete: (I viewed one of the better 17U games with an OT victory for Oly vs FCA.)
2023
Jake Gabbard SG 5’9 R.A. Long/WA (FCA) (Pictured)
Jake was a monster in this OT thriller. He was seemingly unguardable all game. He made 3’s from everywhere and also has a sneaky burst to get to the basket. He is crafty around the rim with difficult shots in traffic.
Gunnar Harroun PF 6’6 Tumwater/WA (Oly Basketball Academy)
Arguably the best post footwork that I viewed for the division. He had a soft touch with either hand (actually went with his left hand more then his dominant right) and had up and unders and counter moves. He rebounded well and brought some physicality to the court.
Michael Lorton Watkins SG 5’10 Hoquiam/WA (Oly Basketball Academy)
A top notch athlete has, what we believe to be, a 40 inch vertical. He is a top of the box type of leaper. He made dunks in transition and had one of the best blocks of the tournament. He met the opposing player at the rim and timed it perfectly to block his shot.
2024
Aeybel Millan 5’9 SG 2024 R. A. Long/WA (FCA)
Another shooter for the FCA undersized 17U team. They spread it out and literally played five out the whole time. Aeybel benefited from it and lit it up. He is shifty and plays with a high IQ.
Simon Nysted SG 6’0 Black Hills/WA (Oly Basketball Academy)
A long armed shooting guard has a super quick shooting trigger. He has deep three point range and gets hot very quickly. He uses his length to play the passing lanes and the rising junior should have a big year.
2025
Micah Anderson PG 6’1 North Thurston/WA (Team Anderson Elite)
A bigger lead guard with good length and a huge IQ. He is a very unselfish player and looks to make plays for others often. He can make up the court passes and drive and kick it out to shooters. He is a tough on-ball defender and will score with threes off the catch and he is a very patient and confident guard.
Payton Thrill SG 5’11 R. A. Long/WA (FCA)
A long baby faced shooting guard has a good feel for the game and can shoot it. He has ice in his veins as he hit the three to send the best game into OT.
