On May 21st-22nd I attended Ron Coleman’s Southwest Showcase Summer Championship (Session 2) at the Kroc Center in Phx, AZ.

I focused on Varsity and JV Gold Boys divisions and I ended up watching 20+ teams.

Here were some of the 2023 CG/PG standouts from the weekend:

[player_tooltip player_id="856640" first="Darnell" last="Fizer"] Coronado (AZ Select Capp)

The Vegas product has been great all Spring and the bigger combo guard showed off in his first AZ event. He shot the ball unusually well from the three point line and made plays for his teammates. He uses his thicker frame to get downhill and is a good rebounder and plus defender. He guards the 1-3 with his size and length.

[player_tooltip player_id="814516" first="Bryce" last="Ford"] Pinnacle (Factory)

Moving up from Factory’s second team to the top team was seamless. He drove and kicked it to his open players and did what he does well, and that is shoot it from the three point line. The lefty flips it off his fingers quickly and lets it fly with range. He has a nice floater game and him and Reese will be a problem this season for the Pioneers. (An AIA 6A version of the splash brothers?)

[player_tooltip player_id="814508" first="Andrew" last="Camacho"] Peoria (Firestorm Elite)

The sharp shooter of the Firestorm program started slowly on Saturday morning but heated up per usual later in the day and it continued on Sunday. He has a high IQ, deep shooting range and is very crafty and savvy to score in the paint. He puts the defender on his hip and uses the floater and comes off screens and fires away. His form and precision are about as good as it gets.

[player_tooltip player_id="1275428" first="Zander" last="Kamai"] Paradise Honors (Firestorm Black) (Pictured)

Zander seems to impress every weekend in some way. This event he played a lot of the lead guard role and looked very comfortable facilitating. He made a couple pick and roll decisions that lead to nifty pocket passes to the cutter. The lefty still has that pretty looking jumper from mid to the three point lane and can get into the lane and finish or dish it off. I see him being a long term point guard in college with good size.

[player_tooltip player_id="814521" first="Aadem" last="Isai"] Valley Vista (The Fellas)

The rising senior guard plays with a high feel for the game and he comes with range. He changes speeds often to get defenders off of him and he will take it to the rim with no fear or he can step back on his defenders. He can throw the ball around to teammates with either hand with timely passes.

[player_tooltip player_id="814507" first="Davion" last="Butler"] McClintock (Firestorm Elite)

A quick ball handler with speed and deep range. When his shot is falling, and he gets rolling, he is hard to contain. It is impressive to see how quickly he lines up his shot off a curl. He made a few full court and bounce passes on a dime showing off his passing skills. He is tough on the ball defensively, despite being a little undersized, and competes at a high level.

[player_tooltip player_id="814519" first="Matthew" last="Henry-Harrison"] Paradise Honors (Factory)

A thicker guard gets into the lane with his sturdy frame and scores in traffic. He shot the ball well and played both guard spots. He made good reads and is quick on the ball defensively. Once he is in rhythm, he can roll out two-three shots in a row.

[player_tooltip player_id="831129" first="Eric" last="Perkins"] Deer Valley (Peak Basketball Premier)

A natural scorer can play on or off the ball. He can shoot it from the three point line off the catch and he knows how to change speeds and get to the rim. He uses a hesitation move and will burst right by. He makes a nice variety of layups from floaters, runners and swooping layups.

[player_tooltip player_id="1301327" first="Jack" last="Brackmann"] Horizon (Peak Basketball Premier)

A smart and skilled combo guard has the ability to hit shots and make plays for his teammates. He makes the extra pass for a better shot and takes care of the ball. He may end up being the lead guard for the Huskies this season or at least the secondary ball handler.
