The Scholars feature three players ranked in five-star status including two that could easily be considered top three. Meanstreets had a valiant comeback attempt that came up just short falling 63-60. We dive into the top performers in Meanstreets vs NJ Scholars: Standout Performers!
Dalen Davis Dalen Davis 6'0" | PG Whitney Young | 2023 State #167 Nation IL (Meanstreets)
Big outing for the top 5 rising senior in Illinois. The 2023 Whitney Young floor general did a nice job of mixing in his scoring and distributing in this contest. His pull up game was on point as he hit 3-4 from beyond the arc along with a couple inside from 15 feet. Stops on a dime and rises up over defenders. He had a couple of acrobatic finishes in the paint and got to the line where he was 3-4 finishing with 20 points. Also had 4 dimes in the game displaying solid overall court vision in the half court working particularly well in the pick/roll game.
Richard Barron Richard Barron 6'5" | SF St. Ignatius | 2023 State IL (Meanstreets)
Bit of a slow start for the St. Ignatius big bodied wing, but then he started to get it going. He was 4-10 for three scoring most of his points on catch and shoot threes. That is probably his best asset at this stage of the process. Struggled defensively and didn’t really put it on the deck to try to use his strength much finishing with 14 points.
Miles Rubin Miles Rubin 6'7" | PF Homewood Flossmoor | 2023 State #243 Nation IL (Meanstreets)
Simeon power forward Miles Rubin Miles Rubin 6'7" | PF Homewood Flossmoor | 2023 State #243 Nation IL had a solid outing against the massive front line from the NJ Scholars. Competed on the glass with his quick second jump including a put back. Mobile on the offensive end with a pick and roll finish. Flashed some of the upside we saw during the high school season on the defensive end. Went for 8 points and 6 rebounds.
RJ Taylor RJ Taylor 6'0" | PG Grand Blanc | 2023 State #262 Nation MI (Meanstreets)
The Northern Iowa commit was a prospect that grew on us all spring last year and continues to show why he is a great MVC pick up. In this game he was looking to set up his teammates as a distributor with sound passing in the half court for 7 dimes. Also chipped in 7 points as well on a three and a couple nifty finishes in the paint.
McKenzie Mgbako (NJ Scholars)
My first look at the Duke commit and was beyond impressed. The 6’8” combo forward has a ton of projectability toward the next level and the NBA. Long and lanky frame with explosive athleticism around the rim as he threw down a monster slam early to set the tone. Struggled from three going 0-6, but his feathery jumper was on point inside the arc draining them over and over again. Love how he sets up his shot with one or two dribbles then rising up with ease. Versatile defender that can check all over the floor. Future lottery pick. He had 18 points (8-16 FG) and 5 rebounds.
Dajuan Wagner (NJ Scholars)
Wagner has been pegged by many as the top prospect in the 2023 class. With his grandfather recently being hired by Louisville the smart bet is he will be a Cardinal. Solid not spectacular game from the five star combo guard. He showed flashes of his scoring off the bounce on straight line takes, and-1s, and playing in transition off their team defense. Only 1-4 from distance. Was pleasantly surprised with how well he passed the rock. Made good decisions getting it to his big men and shooters in spots where they could do damage in the half court. Finished with 11 points and 9 assists.
Aaron Bradshaw Aaron Bradshaw 7'0" | PF Camden | 2023 State #10 Nation NJ (NJ Scholars)
This 7’0” big man jumped off the floor to us. The combination of skill, physical tools, and athleticism are off the charts. Baseline jumper with touch along with several dunks and high pointing rebounds in traffic. Force defensively blocking shots with his timing and quickness off the floor. He had 16 points and 10 rebounds. Looked the part of a McDonald’s All-American.
