It was a great start to the first day of live periods, and should be a good indicator of a strong summer for these kids! Be on the lookout for my other articles from this event over the coming week!
Phillip Lewis Jr 2024 6’3 Mickey Leland High School, TX (Beast Elite 16U)
Phillip is an aggressive forward who knows how to dominate his opponent from all three levels of the floor. He is a consistent shooter from the perimeter, but is a bully when he is looking to get into the paint and finish at the rim. I loved watching him manipulate the defense however he wanted to, he could sneak around the corners and the wings to get an open look after a cross court pass, or slip to the rim for an easy dunk in the lane. Lewis has all of the tools to become an elite offensive weapon, which pairs well with his stout ability to protect the rim and anchor his team’s defense. He is an aggressive rim protector who routinely throws shots into the stands and moves his feet over to be in seemingly every play in the paint. He is willing to slide over and protect the rim and put his body on the line. I would like to see continue to develop his handle from the perimeter.
Marvin Isom 2024 5’11 Ocean Springs High School, MS (Community Saved)
Marvin is a high level guard who not only is a willing rebounder but also a creative distributor and initiator of offense. He displayed a real ability to attack in the full court and loves picking apart the defense by beating the other team up the court. He routinely drew a second defender after getting two feet into the paint, and calmly made the right dump off pass to his bigs for an easy layup. It was a pleasure watching him manipulate the defense with a live dribble and his ball movement. He is good at getting downhill and putting pressure on the defense by attacking the rim. On the defensive end of the floor, he is good at denying his opponents an opportunity to even catch the ball on the perimeter. He is good at staying low and chopping his feet to keep his opponent in front of him. I would like to see him work on poking the ball free with his active and harassing hands.
Shawn Mclean 2024 6’0 Belton High School, TX (House4Hoops 16U)
Shawn is an aggressive playmaker who knows how to get into the paint and wreak havoc on his way to the rim. He showed an ability to calmly hang in the air and finish in traffic, even against multiple defenders and contact. He was good at staying upright in the air, even after absorbing a bump and finished with consistency in the paint. He is a leader on his team, and helps his teammates on the offensive and defensive end of the floor. I loved his vocalness and willingness to lead his teammates and be direct. It is clear he has a high basketball IQ and is willing to share it with his team. I would like to see him work on his ability to score off the dribble from the perimeter. As he develops his stroke from the perimeter, he will continue to become a more dynamic athlete when he attacks the basket.
Matthew Krass 2024 6’2 St Patrick Catholic High School, MS (Community Saved)
Matthew is a harassing defender who locked up some high level ball handlers and wings on the perimeter, and showed how stout his defense is on the interior as well. I was impressed with his ability to consistently tie up ball handlers and poke the ball free. He is good at turning defense into offense and running on the fast break. He has a tight handle and is aware of where his opponents want him to go and can crossover his opponents hard in the full court. Once given space, he calmly attacks it and keeps his head up to make the right reads. He is not afraid of contact and goes up strong towards the rim. I loved his aggressiveness and ability to get into the paint and draw a second defender. I would like to see him attack the defense from the perimeter and the midrange, and be more willing to take the 15 footer when given to him.
