It was a great start to the first day of live periods, and should be a good indicator of a strong summer for these kids! Be on the lookout for my other articles from this event over the coming week!
Xavier Clayton 2023 5’11 La Marque High School, TX (XL’s Prospects)
Xavier is a sharpshooting guard who thrives at creating a glimmer of space and knocking down shots from deep NBA range. I was very impressed by his ability to consistently knock down shots on the perimeter. He is a real weapon when he gets a chance to set his feet and square up, but showed an ability to create space with a live dribble and calmly shoot off the bounce. He has the ability to threaten the defense from deep three point range, which forces the defense to play up on him even further from the rim, further clearing space for him to attack the rim. I would like to see him work on his ability to attack the basket and get downhill with more consistency within the half court. I would like to see him work on his ability to make the right reads and extra passes within the full court, instead of hunting for his shot from beyond the arc at times.
Dexter Smith 2023 6’0 Westfield High School, TX (Houston Rebels Elite-Blue)
Dexter is an aggressive guard who has a natural ability to absorb contact in the paint, I loved his ability to get two feet into the paint and finish through an opponent’s chest. He is not only an aggressive player whenever he gets downhill, he fights hard on the defensive end of the floor as well. He has a knack of tying up ball handlers and forcing them into bad spots on the floor. It was fun watching him fly all over the court on both ends of the floor, diving after loose balls and fighting hard for every possession on the floor. He is good at coming over as a second defender and poking the ball free as his opponent has his back turned to him. I would like to see him work on his ability to score off the dribble from the perimeter, especially out of the pick and roll. Once he learns to manipulate the defense better out of the pick and roll and forcing the second defender to really commit and make a decision, he will become an even more valuable weapon.
Daymian Parramore 2023 6’5 Northside High School, TX (Beast Elite Blue)
Daymian is a forward with great size and a real ability to finish in the paint and play off of his lead guards. He has good hands and can snatch passes that are thrown out of position, and then quickly put it on the floor and finish in the paint. He tweaked his ankle late in the game, but hung in there and came up with big layups down the stretch of the game to give his team the lead late on Sunday. He is good at finishing out of the pick and roll, but needs to work on staying grounded for a beat longer on his screens.
Robert Millender 2023 6’6 Pascagoula High School, MS (Community Saved)
Robert is a dynamic wing who can go coast to coast in a heartbeat after locking up his defender on the other end of the floor. He is a strong finisher whenever he is going downhill and attacking the rim. He is an aggressive finisher in the lane who knows how to absorb contact and finish through multiple defenders. On the defensive end of the floor, he actively jumps passes in the passing lanes. He is great at bating his opponent into making an entry pass into the post and using his long arms to poke the ball free. He is a well rounded player on the defensive end of the floor, which makes him a valuable weapon, and should be garnering some attention from some coaches over the next year and this summer!
