This past weekend showed us a few potent volume shooters with the ability to put the rock up consistently from college range. More and more athletes are relying on the jump shot range as a way to open up driving lanes.

[player_tooltip player_id="1284506" first="Tyler" last="HUNSINGER"] - Pro Skills (PSB)

Serving as the primary scoring option for PSB, Hunsinger’s confidence was off the charts throughout the weekend. Hailing from Denver South, at roughly 6’ 150 lbs, Hunsinger had to be averaging nearly 20 points per game while taking at least eight threes per game. The variety of shots he took were half the fun, where he pulled jumpers coming off curls and flare screens the majority of the time. However, Hunsinger did prove he could get downhill with the addition of a screen since the defense pressed him multiple feet beyond the three point line.

[player_tooltip player_id="1420178" first="Peyton" last="Torres"] - Colorado Anarchy

The final match from Sunday came with Torres hitting a clutch and one three pointer. Torres is a smooth 6’2 combo guard capable creating his own shot or flowing with the offense. He possesses a lightning quick shot, capable coming off movement or simply stepping into the jumper. In the fast break, Torres had a few behind the back moves that caught the defense reaching, often leading to fouls. Out of all the names on there, Torres struck me as the most daring ballhandler when it came against suffocating on-ball pressure.

[player_tooltip player_id="1420185" first="Ty" last="Afraimi"] - Colorado Miners

Afraimi has been a consistently improving shooting guard out of Columbine high school at 6’. The southpaw is capable stepping into shots out of the pick and roll or simply spotting up from the wings. Although he doesn’t have the quickest shot, Afraimi rarely gets sped up in the half-court. Point being, he is calm and collected especially in clutch situations. One area Afraimi has done well in for a while is his short floater confidence and shooting over taller defenders.

[player_tooltip player_id="1285224" first="Ethan" last="Levin"] - Colorado Miners

The 5’10 volume shooter from Kent Denver High, Levin continued a steady volume of threes as the Miners remained one of the more dominant 17U groups this weekend. Levin is the one and only dude you cannot leave open no matter what. He is capable coming off an action into the shot or just sitting in the corner, patiently waiting to hit a dagger. One aspect of Levin’s playstyle that is just contagious was his off-ball movement. Similar to Stephen Curry there is less time in a half-court possession where the guy is not moving rather than sprinting around full speed. Those habits grow on teammates.

Steffen Schattinger - Hoops Academy

Playing a combination of spot up shooting and secondary playmaking, Schattinger is a potent shooter with range. Hailing from Dakota Ridge high school, Schattinger has progressed as a ballhandler while maneuvering through traffic, allowing him to take full advantage of his deep range. When he’s heating up, the 6’ guard is capable swishing shots off the catch three or four feet behind the college line. The biggest surprise with the wiry guard was his strength, where he caused jump ball situations once or twice a game.
