Continue ReadingThis tough and talented group of freshmen has had an excellent start to the AAU season. They have been to two tournaments so far in the young grassroots campaign. Travis Hoeg is the coach for this group. Hoeg is also the head boys basketball coach at Fargo North. ECI 15U Prospects head to Minneapolis this weekend for the first session of the Sanford Pentagon Tournament Series. Read below for an in-depth look at this ECI team.
Comets Shootout Review
It was an excellent first showing for this team. Some of the guys have played together in the past but they also have some new players on the squad, so you never know how they will gel together. ECI runs a dribble-drive offensive with a few rules but they have the freedom to make plays and react. They thrived for their first time together. This ECI team played very fast on offense and they applied heavy ball pressure which led to an up-tempo pace. ECI also played impressive team defense and they rebounded well. This 15U team played very unselfishly. It was an overall gratifying and successful first tournament.

Midwest Live Review
If the first tournament was excellent than the second was exemplary! ECI had two 20+ blowout wins and one super-competitive game where they pulled out a nice 1-point win. It was great for this group to play in a tightly contested game and to be tested down the stretch. This team really plays for one another and they have bought into coach Hoegs’s philosophy. The ECI 15U Prospects are gritty and they play extremely hard. This group plays with an edge and every player is super competitive.

Roster
Aric Winczewski Aric Winczewski 6'2" | CG Minot | 2025 State ND |6’0 G| Minot
He is a great leader & communicator. Aric can hit the 3-ball and he is a stud slasher. He has advanced skills and Winczewski is beyond proficient at finishing with 2-feet. He thrives at getting into the paint and making plays. Aric is a tough on-ball defender and he excels at team defense. Winczewski is a coach’s son with a very high hoops IQ.
Brady Westphal Brady Westphal 6'2" | SG West Fargo Horace | 2025 State ND |6’0 G| Horace
This kid is a 3-point sniper with extended range. Westphal is great at the catch-n-shoot game. He moves well without the ball and Brady knows how to get to his spot for a clean look. This lefty is an in-rhythm shooter. He is another high IQ player and a student of the game. Brady has sacrificed his body on defense by taking charges.
Grady Swanson Grady Swanson 6'1" | SG Bismarck | 2025 State ND |5’11 G| Bismarck
I really like this kid’s pull-up game, especially from the mid-range. He gets the defense moving backward and he pulls up with great fluidity and proper mechanics. Swanson is also a very effective three-point shooter. Like the rest of his teammates, Grady plays very hard all the time and he is a team defender.
Pearce Parks Pearce Parks 6'2" | SG Grand Forks Red River | 2025 State ND |6’1 F/G| Grand Forks Red River
He had a nice school ball season and Parks is now having a breakout start to the AAU season. His stock is rising! Pearce is an all-around stud that does a bit of everything on the floor. He is a physical specimen and a star athlete. Parks does not look like a freshman. He is a guard/wing/SF. Parks can hit 3’s and he really thrives at getting downhill for high percentage looks. Parks will also post up and play bully-ball. Look out for Pearce!
Grayson Schaeffer Grayson Schaeffer 6'5" | SF Minot | 2025 State ND |6’4 F| Minot
I saw him play live for the first time at the ECI tryouts and I was very impressed. Schaeffer has been a standout so far in AAU. He is a freak athlete that makes splashy plays for ECI. He is not just an athlete, Grayson has highly developed fundamentals as well. Schaefer hits the boards hard, he is tough, and he defends well. Grayson is a star in the making.
Carter Baasch Carter Baasch 5'7" | SG Maple River | 2025 State ND |5’6 G| Maple River
This kid plays with a ton of energy and vigor. He is a sparkplug for ECI. Carter has been impressive with his quick feet and open court speed. Baasch is a fast and furious player. Throughout the two tournaments, Carter has beat many players in a foot race on the way to the hoop for fullcourt layups. He is a grinder on D that applies harsh ball pressure.
Mason Larson |6’1 SF| Ada-Borup-West
He is a dark horse and an x-factor for this team. Larson plays much bigger than his 6’1 height. On offense, he shoots and penetrates well. Mason is a very good rebounder and he reads the ball of the rim very well. Larson is an unselfish team player that will do anything to help his squad.
Ramsey Walz Ramsey Walz 6'7" | PF Bishop Ryan | 2025 State #313 Nation ND |6’5 PF| Bishop Ryan
This Lion had a successful school season and he helped get his team to State. Walz is a big and strong low-post player. He boards up and he plays physical around the basket on both ends. Ramsey is a physical rebounder. He can also stroke the 3-ball. He creates problems for the opposing team by taking his BIG out to the perimeter. Walz can also hit deep 3-balls. He is another tough player for ECI.
