However, the KSHSAA and Sports in Kansas publication did include a handful of juniors in their first-team selections. These were some of the best players in the state this past season, and they are set the standard for everyone else next year.
Here is a look at the juniors named first-team for the all-state teams from the 2A-3A levels:
Jake Proctor, 6-foot-4 forward, 2023 Hesston:
Here’s a guy that will merit a ton more attention from Prep Hoops moving forward. The well-balanced Threshers didn’t really rely on any one to star as it repeated as state champs. He was a source of a lot of points when the Threshers needed it. His length and skills from the perimeter make him a tough guy to stop.
Landon Boss Landon Boss 6'1" | SF Osage City | 2023 State KS , 6-foot-1 forward, 2023, Osage City:
Boss is one of the most prolific scorers in the state, getting it done inside and out. He averaged 24 points this season.
Eli Sawyers Eli Sawyers 6'7" | SF Southeast Of Saline | 2023 State KS , 6-foot-5 forward, 2023, Southeast of Saline:
Sawyers is unselfish and versatile, but gets a lot done without a lot of flash. He gave the Trojans 16.5 points, 6 boards and 3.5 assists per game. He was huge with 22 points in the state semifinal win over Osage City.
Brekyn Ratzlaff Brekyn Ratzlaff 6'0" | PG Hillsboro | 2023 State KS , 6-foot guard, 2023, Hillsboro (pictured):
Named 2A Player of the Year by Sports in Kansas, you really only need to know one thing about Ratzlaff: back-to-back championships. Ratzlaff is a dynamic force at both ends, and his numbers back up his reputation. He recorded 18.2 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 2.2 steals per game as a junior after making first-team 2A as a sophomore.
Keller Hurla Keller Hurla 6'0" | CG St. Marys | 2023 State KS , 6-foot guard, 2023, St. Marys:
Hurla was part of a balanced veteran team that went to the state championship, but when it needed a play, it was usually Keller Hurla Keller Hurla 6'0" | CG St. Marys | 2023 State KS making it. He’s more than just a shooter, and is sneaky athletic. He averaged nearly 20 points as a junior. He was a third-team 3A pick as a sophomore.
Britton Dutton Britton Dutton 6'0" | SG Argo Comm | 2023 State KS , 6-foot-1 guard, 2023, Ellinwood:
Dutton was second-team 2A as a sophomore, and continued scoring at a blistering pace as a junior. He can create his own shot and is deadly from deep. He scored 25 points per outing this year.
Dylan Cervantez, 5-foot-10 guard, 2023, Valley Falls:
Cervantez was a bit of surprise on the first team of the Sports in Kansas’ 2A first team. But this multi-sport stud certainly did make some waves for a team that reached the semifinals. He’s an athletic ball handler and passer and can really shoot. He averaged 15 points for a well-balanced Dragon offense.
