With an abundance of great performances and performers over the weekend, we had to select an all-Louisiana team from the weekend. So, here are the best of the best from the Boot from the Easter Classic.
First Team
Theron Johnson Theron Johnson 6'4" | SF Alexandria | 2022 State LA (Cenla Storm ’23)
De’Vion Lavergne De’Vion Lavergne 6'3" | CG North Central | 2023 State LA (Xtreme Hoops ’23)
Omarion Layssard Omarion Layssard 6'2" | SG Northwood | 2023 State LA (Cenla Dynasty ’23)
Jeremiah Lewis Jeremiah Lewis 6'3" | SG Ponchatoula | 2024 State LA (HP Ballers ’24)
Jordan Mathews Jordan Mathews 6'5" | SF Peabody | 2024 State LA (Cenla Storm ’24)
Hays Regard Hays Regard 6'4" | SG St. Thomas More | 2024 State LA (Xtreme Hoops ’24)
These guys were dynamic during Easter weekend. Johnson may be one of the most underrated forwards (wings) in the 2022 class. He showed an ability to get to the rim and defend multiple positions. Lavergne was the best combo guard throughout the weekend and showed why he is an ascending player in the class of 2023 in Louisiana. Layssard took punishment all weekend and finished through contact repeatedly. His aerial assault on the rim was a sight to see also. Lewis put on a shooting display from behind the arc that was not matched by anyone. Mathews has a total game that was impressive to say the least. He had a number of turnovers but he did an assortment of other things to make up for it. Regard was an all-around force for Xtreme Hoops ’24. His scoring and defense set him apart from others during the weekend.
Second Team
Jonathan Barron Jonathan Barron 5'11" | PG Northwood-Lena | 2023 State LA (Cenla Dynasty ’23)
Earnest Chatman Earnest Chatman 6'0" | CG Ruston | 2024 State LA (WBBP Rush ’23)
Demichael Chew (Cenla Storm ’24)
Jayden Dugas Jayden Dugas 6'2" | CG Northside | 2023 State LA (Cenla Storm ’23)
Jamarion Johnnie (Xtreme Hoops ’23)
Kevin Jones Kevin Jones 6'4" | SF Peabody | 2023 State LA (Cenla Storm ’23)
Barron showed his three point shooting prowess along with some acrobatic finishes at the rim throughout play on Saturday and Sunday. Chatman proved that big guards can handle business on both ends of the floor. Chew shot the trey well stretching the floor for the bigs on his team to go to work. Dugas had two-way success throughout the weekend guarding some of the more skilled guards on the weekend. Johnnie is an uber-athletic forward who ran the floor and finished at the rim showing off his athleticism. Jones performed well on the offensive and defensive boards. He also had some dunks that rocked the rim as well.
Third Team
Taj Jackson Taj Jackson 6'2" | CG Ponchatoula | 2024 State LA (HP Hoops ’24)
Bri’trevian Lee (Cenla Storm ’24)
Bralyn Mayfield (WBBP Rush ’23)
Dylan Paddio (Xtreme Hoops ’24)
Shea Plowden (Xtreme Hoops ’23)
Byron Smith (Xtreme Hoops ’24)
The Prep Hoops Circuit is a good platform to see players that are not seen on the shoe circuit or during other high profile tournaments. The Louisiana players who performed at a high level during Easter weekend will be in the running for some of the best players seen during the grassroots season. Mother’s Day weekend will be the next tournament in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Look for a lot of these preps to return to perform on the Prep Hoops stage that weekend.
