Below is a review of six SEPA prospects we saw in-person or via online streams in the last week who impressed us with their extraordinary level of play.
Jalil Bethea Jalil Bethea 6'4" | SG Archbishop Wood | 2024 State #5 Nation PA – 6’2” / Sophomore / Archbishop Wood / Philly Revolution / Shooting Guard: Archbishop Wood’s journey to 6A state championship has only bolstered Bethea’s reputation as one of the top three-point snipers in the region. In the quarterfinals, he came off the bench to score 37 points thanks to 11-of-12 shooting on threes. Bethea dropped 5 triples in the 2nd quarter of that game. Next Bethea posted 13 points (2 threes) in Wood’s semis win vs. Fox Chapel. Bethea holds offers from Temple and Robert Morris. However, after his showing in the state tourney, we are sure more will come pouring in shortly.
Lamar Glover – 5’10” / Senior / Constitution / We R1 / Wing: If opponents become fixated on stopping Constitution superstar Jacob Beccles Jacob Beccles 6'3" | CG Constitution | 2022 State PA , that leaves Glover one on one with his defender. That is a huge mistake. Glover is a solid three-point shooter who can create space for himself off the dribble. He also has the foot speed and handles to score the ball in transition. This week Glover registered 15 points in Constitution’s 2A quarterfinals victory and then 29 points (1 three) and 6 steals in their semis win against Old Forge. Constitution will face OLSH in the 2A title game on Friday night.
Jacen Holloway Jacen Holloway 6'4" | SF Devon Prep | 2023 State PA – 6’3” / Junior/ Devon Prep / Prim3 Tim3 / Small Forward: Holloway is extraordinarily difficult to defend because he is an interior as well as perimeter threat. He is too big and physical for most guards to handle from the mid-range to the post. Yet, he is too athletic and quick for the majority of bigs to guard him in space. Holloway also owns a watery jump shot and solid dribbling skills. This versatile small forward scored 22 points (4-4 on threes) and grabbed 6 rebounds in Devon’s 3A quarterfinal upset of West Catholic. In the semis, Holloway contributed 19 points (3 triples), 4 rebounds and 4 assists during DP’s victory over Holy Redeemer. This coming Saturday Devon Prep takes on Aliquippa in the 3A championship game.
Demetrius Lilley Demetrius Lilley 6'8" | PF Lower Merion | 2022 State PA – 6’9” / Senior / Lower Merion / Philly Pride National / Power Forward: Lilley is well known as one of the most dominant interior prospects in southeastern Pennsylvania. During the 2021-22 regular season he revealed his ability to hit three-pointers. That combination was on full display over the last week as Lilley posted two double-doubles. First, he rang up 30 points (1 three) and 12 rebounds in the Aces 6A quarterfinals win over Scranton. In the semifinals Lilley posted 14 points (two 3PM) and grabbed 10 boards in a loss to Roman Catholic. Across LM’s four game run to the 6A state semis, the Penn State commit averaged 23 points and 10 boards per game.
Kevin Rucker – 6’5” / Sophomore / Chester / Team Final Black / Combo Guard: Over Chester’s final three 5A state tournament games this long and athletic scoring guard averaged 15.3 ppg. Highlighting Rucker’s outstanding state tourney play was his 26-point performance in the Clippers’ quarterfinal win over Shippensburg. Unfortunately, Rucker and company’s state tourney journey ended with a semi-final loss to nationally ranked Imhotep Charter. However, in addition to Rucker, Chester’s roster contains multiple talented underclassmen. That young roster led the team to a 26-5 record this season. So, Chester should be a contender for years to come.
Robert Wright III Robert Wright III 6'0" | PG Montverde Academy (FL) | 2024 State #35 Nation FL – 6’2” / Sophomore / Neumann-Goretti / Team Final EYBL / Point Guard: At the conclusion of the 2021-22 regular season Wright (18 ppg.; 5 rpg.; 4 apg.) was named as a 1st Team All-Philadelphia Catholic League selection. So, the fact that this versatile guard is posting impressive numbers in the 4A state tournament should not come as a surprise. Wright’s ability run as a scoring point guard or one that facilitates for teammates is remarkable for such a young prospect. During recent state tourney action Wright has been in score first mode. He hit for 20 points (3 threes) in the 4A quarterfinals. Wright then stuffed the stat sheet with 30 points (7 of 10 on threes), 6 rebounds and 4 dimes in semis win over Dallas. This coming Thursday night the Saints will match-up against Quaker Valley for the 4A hardware.
