Northview 68, Muskegon 55

Last night, I was out at Grand Haven High School for the highly anticipated Division 1 Regional Semifinal between Muskegon and Northview. It was arguably the game of the year in West Michigan and deserving of a Regional Championship matchup. Northview led 13-10 after the first then outscored Muskegon 15-9 in the second to take a 28-19 lead into the half. Muskegon was aggressive in getting to the basket and racked up the fouls against Northview as a result. However, the Big Reds struggled at the free-throw line all night and couldn’t cut into the lead even with Mr. Basketball finalist, Kyler Vandejagt sitting for a large part of the first half.

In the third quarter, Northview got contributions from Vanderjagt, [player_tooltip player_id="864018" first="Jalen" last="Charity"], [player_tooltip player_id="987644" first="Tyran" last="Thomas"], [player_tooltip player_id="1111924" first="EJ" last="Ryans"], and [player_tooltip player_id="1068141" first="Grant" last="George"] to separate from Muskegon. [player_tooltip player_id="987644" first="Tyran" last="Thomas"] was especially effective in the paint, grabbing loose balls and rebounds and creating numerous second-chance opportunities for Northview. In my opinion, it was Tyran’s efforts that turned out to be the ultimate x-factor that helped Northview maintain its lead throughout. In the 4th quarter, the Big Red went on an 11-0 run and got within three points of Northview midway through the 4th. Northview capitalized at the free-throw line down the stretch to win by a comfortable margin over the Big Reds. It was as impressive of a win as you’ll find by any team across the state. This Northview team is the most complete team I’ve covered in Division 1 and should be considered a favorite to make it to the Breslin with only two games standing between them and the final four.
