Now, after cutting down the nets on Saturday night, we are down to just 16 teams. We will have plenty of semi-state content coming this week as we lead into each respective Final Four. However, first, let’s take a look at some Regional Final action. I was at the Southport Fieldhouse for a heavyweight battle between Cathedral and Ben Davis.
After losing to the Giants 67-64 during the regular season, Cathedral was out for revenge. From the opening tip, the Fighting Irish got the very best version of their 4-star junior big man Xavier Booker Xavier Booker 6'11" | PF Cathedral | 2023 State #4 Nation IN . The 6’11″ forward/center was extremely active on the glass and protecting the rim to set the tone early in the game. However, Ben Davis continued to hang around throughout the first half. Tayshawn Comer Tayshawn Comer 6'0" | PG Cathedral | 2022 State #226 Nation IN hit a three-pointer as time expired in the half to give Cathedral a 33-29 advantage heading into the locker room.
Whatever was said during the halftime break by head coach Jason Delaney certainly worked for the Irish. They came out and won the third period 22-9 to effectively put the game away. Booker continued to dominate the action on both ends of the floor while Comer controlled the pace for Cathedral. Ben Davis’ struggles to score in the third quarter kept them from being in a position to get over the hump in the fourth. The Fighting Irish would go on to cruise to a 72-57 victory.
Cathedral, now 24-6 on the season, advances to face Bloomington North at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday at Washington High School. Ben Davis concludes their season with a 22-7 record.
Jaron Tibbs Jaron Tibbs 6'4" | SF Cathedral | 2023 State IN , a 6’4″ athletic wing, ended up leading Cathedral with 20 points, including 15 in the second half, to lead all scorers. Playing in front of Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo and a pair of Spartan assistants, Xavier Booker Xavier Booker 6'11" | PF Cathedral | 2023 State #4 Nation IN went off for 17 points, 13 rebounds, and 7 blocks. He played at an extremely high level. Eastern Kentucky signee Tayshawn Comer Tayshawn Comer 6'0" | PG Cathedral | 2022 State #226 Nation IN added 14 points and 5 assists for the Irish.
