Check out my scouting reports on the players voted to the State Championship Second Team for the 6A division. Duncanville beat McKinney in the 6A Championship game with a final score of 69-49. Duncanville knocked off Atascocita in the Semi-Finals with a score of 50-36, and McKinney knocked off Austin Westlake with a score of 68-66 in double overtime.

[player_tooltip player_id="1039599" first="Donovan" last="Santoro"]-Simmons 6’8 2022 Austin Westlake High School

Donovan is an athletic forward who can score off the dribble or dominate you with his back to the basket. He showed an ability to spot up and knock down shots when given the space as well. He is long and lanky with an ability to defend on the perimeter and reject shots in the paint. He had an incredibly impressive block on a good three point shooter in the semi-finals which allowed him to snatch the deflected ball and run on the break. After Westlake lost their star player in the first overtime period, the team turned to Santoro-Simmons and he did not disappoint. He single handedly put the team on his back and got to his shot in the midrange, or attacking the basket. He hit big shots down the stretch of the fourth quarter and the first overtime to help keep his team alive during an intense battle with McKinney in the semi-finals.

[player_tooltip player_id="892148" first="JaCovey" last="Campbell"] 2023 5’9 McKinney High School

JaCovey is an intelligent point guard who thrives in the half court, he creates a plethora of shot opportunities for his teammates. He is great at getting into the teeth of the defense and kicking it out to his shooters on the wing. His ability to create opportunities for his teammates in the half court allows everyone to touch the ball and affect the game. He has a real back court connection with [player_tooltip player_id="892132" first="Ja’Kobe" last="Walter"] and the two of them are a dynamic one-two punch. Both of these two guards are high level threats to dominate their opponent off the dribble and force the defense to slide over and react, allowing them to pick apart the defense.

Landyn Jumawan 6’4 2022 Humble Atascocita High School

Landyn is a sharp shooting wing who has the ability to do all of the little things right on the floor. He comes off the bench to provide a scoring spark for Atascocita, but plays all of the big minutes when it matters the most. His ability to catch and shoot is a deadly weapon and can hit shots from all around the arc. He is a good screener who has a good feel for knowing when to slip the screen and flash to the rim or pop out for a three point opportunity. He is a patient finisher and had multiple instances where he beat elite forwards in the paint with his post control and ability to create space without a dribble. Jumawan has the ability to put the ball on the floor and attack the rim, he can bully smaller guards in the paint and beat bigger forwards off the dribble.

[player_tooltip player_id="1205197" first="Thatcher" last="McClure"] 6’7 2022 McKinney High School

Thatcher is a do it all forward who can space the floor, clean the glass, finish with consistency at the rim or protect the paint. His long arms allow him to not only shoot over the top of defenders, but also reject shots and harass his opponent on the defensive side of the ball. McClure is an elite on and off ball defender who understands how to cut off his opponent’s angles to receive a pass or get a shot off. He is a great close out defender who can chop his feet to keep his opponent in front of him or throw his jumper into the stands. There were multiple instances where he displayed great perimeter defensive instincts. He hit big time three pointers down the stretch to help push McKinney into the championship game.

[player_tooltip player_id="958893" first="Alex" last="Anamekwe"] 6’5 2022 McKinney High School

Alex is an aggressive rebounder and finisher who thrives in the power forward role for McKinney. His energy on the glass allows his team to get second chance points and his ability to consistently finish at the rim gives his team a constant option in the paint, and a real one-two punch in the front court with [player_tooltip player_id="1205197" first="Thatcher" last="McClure"]. His ability to control the paint allows McClure to play outside in on the offensive end of the floor, but also gives Anamekwe the space to attack his defender off the dribble. He routinely got to the rim off the dribble and used his frame and strength to create space around the basket. He has an explosive leaping ability which allows him to finish lobs with ease. He has a real connection with lead guard Ja’Kobe Walters out of the pick and roll and the two of them thrive in their role together.
