Check out my scouting reports on the players voted to the Prep Hoops 5A State Championship Second Team. Beaumont United beat Mansfield Timberview in the 5A Championship game with a final score of 62-57. Beaumount United knocked off (Dallas) Kimball in the Semi-Finals 66-64. Mansfield Timberview knocked off Boerne - Champion in the Semi-Finals 55-43.

[player_tooltip player_id="781882" first="Arterio" last="Morris"] 2022 6’4 Dallas Kimball High School

Arterio is a do it all combo guard for Kimball who punishes teams from the perimeter with his knockdown shooting ability, and is not afraid to throw it down on top of someone’s head. Morris lives on the glass for a guard, especially after losing their senior big man he was a willing rebounder on both ends of the floor. He had two tip dunks that sucked the life out of the gym from the Beaumont United side of the floor I was sitting on. He has an incredibly tight handle with a great ability to create space for himself in the half court and he thrives in the full court. Whether he is using a euro step to evade traffic or side stepping his defender on the perimeter he always seems to be making the right reads at just the right time to avoid contact.

He sees the floor very well and is tasked with initiating most of Kimball’s offense. He lives on the fast break and has a real connection with all of his teammates. He is great at making the right reads in the full court and punishes defenses with his ability to score himself or create a look for a teammate. He has great court awareness on both ends of the floor, he is an aware help defender who has the ability to pick your pocket, block a jumper, or meet you at the rim. Dallas Kimball gave Beaumont United a real battle in the semi finals this year, a 5A title rematch from the previous year. Morris is committed to the University of Texas after a stellar senior season and also boasts a selection to the McDonald’s All American roster as well.

[player_tooltip player_id="958603" first="Chauncey" last="Gibson"] 2022 6’6 Dallas Kimball High School

Chauncey is a sharp shooting point guard who punishes defense with his ability to score in bunches off of a live dribble. He is a high level shot maker off catch, and punishes teams when they give him a glimmer of space. His ability to consistently make shots from beyond the arc was very important for his team’s success as teams closed out hard to contest him, which allowed him to blow by them with a one-two dribble move. He is a high level shot maker off the dribble, and he specializes in the midrange where he creates a ton of space with his handle.

Gibson is an active defender, can punish teams with his ability to reject jumpers as well as looks at the rim. He is an aggressive player on both sides of the floor who takes pride in his ability to turn defense into offense. He is great at poking the ball free and looking for his teammates to run in transition. He is a high level shot maker on the fast break as well, he is good at using the threat of his quick jumper to attack the defense when they are not set. Whether he is slashing to the rim or knocking down shots on the perimeter Gibson always seems to have his hand in making a difference. Dallas Kimball gave Beaumont United a real battle in the semi finals this year, a 5A title rematch from the previous year. Gibson is committed to play at Clemson University next year.

[player_tooltip player_id="1159093" first="Braden" last="Baum"] 2023 6’6 Boerne - Champion High School

Braden was voted to the second team due to his ability to put the team on his back and carry all of the offensive load of the team. He is a knock down shooter when given a glimmer of space. He is deadly off the catch but also can pull up beyond the arc or the midrange when the defense closes out hard. When his shot did not consistently fall from the outside, he put the ball on the floor and could get to the mid range, attack the basket and move off the ball. He was willing to be the decoy on offense and allow his teammates to work on the back side. He is willing to run off screens and wear out his opponent with constant off ball motion. Baum is a highly skilled scorer with all of the tools to become a dynamic shooting guard at the next level due to his ability to defend on the perimeter and play off of a ball dominant guard. His length is a real weapon on the defensive end of the floor and allows him to reject jump shots but also harass ball handlers.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJwvmszw02g&t

[player_tooltip player_id="1160648" first="Charlie" last="Georgelos"] 2024 6’1 Boerne - Champion High School

Charlie is the true point guard of Boerne - Champion’s offense with his ability to create looks, space the floor and finish at the rim. He is a willing passer and has a true ability to create easy looks for his teammates. His passes are always exactly where they need to be, right in his teammate’s shooting pockets or up high as they cut to the rim. He accurately fired cross court passes all night long that allowed his teammate to quickly get a shot off on the weak side of the defense. In the pick and roll, he routinely found his big man slipping to the rim, or a teammate relocating to an open spot on the back side. Georgelos boasted a 2.23 in VPS (Value Point System) throughout his team’s entire playoff run, in which he played 94% of his team’s minutes.

Georgelos is not just a shot creating guard however, he displayed an ability to knock down open shots off the catch and attack the rim with a live dribble. He is patient at the rim, and waits to use his opponent’s momentum against them. He is great at getting downhill after the threat of his jumper has become apparent. He also routinely found space in the midrange and beyond the arc to get his shot off quickly over his defender. Georgelos has a real connection with Braden (Baum 2023), expect Boerne- Champion to be a threat to be back at the semi-finals next year.

[player_tooltip player_id="1217802" first="Kayde" last="Dotson"] 6’2 2024 Beaumont United High School

Kayde is an athletic combo guard who might have had the biggest leap as a prospect during this state title run, it was incredibly clear he was one of the best player’s on the court during both the semi finals and the state title game. He has a very quick and tight handle which allows him to get into the paint with ease. His ability to create space from his defender was very impressive, as he consistently got his spots beyond the arc and finished at the rim when given a glimmer of space. On defense, he closed out hard on his defender and kept his feet moving to keep his defender in front of him.
