Game notes:
An extremely low scoring game considering it went into three overtimes! Part of the reason for the low scoring was each team had very good team defense. Players switching when needing to, but the main reason was definitely less possessions. Two of Brophy’s best players went out with Madi fouling out and Speed nursing an injury, so they held the ball in OT for many minutes and then attacked off the dribble with Nash and Chew.
It was a 12-9 Brophy Prep 1st quarter lead and a 25-22 lead at halftime. It was only 37-all heading into the 4th quarter. Each team only scored 6 points in the quarter and we went into the 1st OT at 43-all. Brophy then basically held the ball the entire quarter and we went into a 2 OT affair. Cody hit two FT’s and Nash hit a runner and we went into 3 OT’s at 45-all. It was 47-all and Koa scored a bucket off an offensive rebound (which he was doing all night) and they went up 49-47 with 49 secs left in 3 OT.
Brophy called a timeout with 11.9 seconds left and Chew got passed his defender but Koa blocked his shot and Anderson got the rebound and immediately got fouled. He missed the FT and Chew tried to hit a shot at the buzzer beyond the 3pt line and three Perry players were waiting for him and I believe Anderson or Cody blocked his shot to give Perry the 49-47 3 OT victory to advance to Wednesday’s 6A Finals versus Hamilton.
Some of the standouts from the game:
Dylan Anderson Dylan Anderson 7'0" | C Perry | 2022 State #88 Nation AZ Perry
Anderson had one of his best overall performance of the year in one of the biggest games he has played in the AIA. He rebounded per usual and blocked shots, two were at HUGE moments in the game. But he was way more aggressive then normal. He never settled for any shots as he was the aggressor. He made an impressive spin move, he caught tough passes in traffic and quickly went to the basket and had a move I haven’t seen him make in four years. He gave a hard jab step and went baseline and scored off the dribble. When he was double teamed, he found players open and his tenacity the whole game was obvious. He finished with 16 points.
Cody Williams Cody Williams 6'8" | SF Perry | 2023 State #25 Nation AZ Perry
Another good showing for Cody. He facilitated for the team when needed be with drive and kicks or good entry passes into the post. He also scored with drives to the basket with his left or right, he hit a couple catch-3’s and made a next level mid-range jumper. He dribbled left and rose up with his right hand high up from 17-feet with a high release. He went coast to coast after he rebounded and pushed the pace. He finished with 16 points.
Koa Peat Koa Peat 6'8" | PF Perry | 2025 State #6 Nation AZ Perry
The talented freshman made his money on the glass. He gobbled up eight rebounds, which included five offensive rebounds in big moments. The last score to the game was his, where he timed the ball right off the glass and put in in with his strong hands and easy touch. He plays above the rim with a quick explosion up and had a few nice blocks. The bigger the moment, it seemed he got better as the game went on. He lets the game come to in, which is a good trait to have.
Ben Egbo Ben Egbo 6'4" | SF Perry | 2023 State AZ Perry
Their 3 and D future wing was defending many players all night. He was on guards and forwards. He blocked shots, rebounded and made hustle plays. He hit a catch-3 and drove the lane quickly with long strides to the basket with his right hand for an important two points. He finished with only 7 points but it was a big seven.
Nolan Brown Nolan Brown 5'9" | PG Perry | 2025 State AZ Perry
A pure PG who is a big time ball handler can defend. His on-ball defense pestered the Broncos all night. He has quick hands and feet. His speed is always on display in the open court and made some nice passes to teammates.
Patrick Chew Patrick Chew 6'4" | SG Brophy | 2022 State AZ Brophy Prep
A well rounded guard is a two-way player. He is tenacious on both ends of the court. He is a very good teammate and will give up his body to make a play. He can hit the catch-3 (made 3), get to the rim and make plays for others. He collects steals, grabs rebounds in bunches and will switch on the 1-5 at any time. He scored 13 points.
Trey Phillips Trey Phillips 6'6" | PF Brophy College Prep | 2022 State AZ Brophy Prep
An active defensive forward guards the 3-5 for them. He scored on put backs with his activity on the glass and he is a quick second jumper to corral the board. He will block shots out of his area with his bounce and timing and can make tough layups in traffic. He scored 8 points.
Miles Nash Miles Nash 6'2" | PG Brophy Prep | 2022 State AZ Brophy Prep
The primary ball handler of the team is another tough guard. He took a couple charges, he rebounds the ball and he is a good on-ball defender. Offensively, he can hit the 3, he has the runner and floater and is natural downhill scorer. He scored 9 points in the loss.
Arman Madi Arman Madi 6'7" | SF Brophy | 2023 State AZ Brophy Prep
A talented wing forward made some big momentum shots in the game. In one sequence he had a catch-3 followed immediately by a steal and a sprint to the other end for a layup and an and-1. He made some nice reads/passes for assists and he unfortunately fouled out and that’s when the Broncos slowed down their offense. He scored 10 points.
Braeden Speed Braeden Speed 6'3" | CG Brophy Prep | 2024 State AZ Brophy Prep
Their defensive standout scored 7 points with two catch-3’s and made plays. He changes speeds and directions very quickly and he is a long strider to the cup. But his presence is felt on the defensive end. He had two powerful blocks and literally guards the 1-5 with his quickness, length and defensive IQ.
