Class 4A was supposed to be wide open this year. The Kingfisher dynasty was supposed to take a step back with five new starters coming into this season. But that’s not how it played out as five new starters made sure that the Kingfisher dynasty continued with a 51-43 win over Victory Christian on Saturday evening. The Yellowjackets completed a nearly perfect season at 28-1 and won their fourth state championship in the last five state tournaments that have been played.
And it was outstanding to watch, unless you were a Victory Christian fan. The Yellowjackets absolutely flipped a switch and became a different team in the fourth quarter. This was a game that was close throughout. The Conquerors led by two points at halftime and again after the third quarter. Then the Yellowjackets knew that it was “winning time”. Despite the five new starters, they were completely comfortable as they absolutely shut down Victory Christian in the final frame.
Kingfisher would outscore Victory Christian 18-8 in the final quarter and there was a span of at least four minutes where Victory Christian would be held scoreless. For over half of the final frame, the Yellowjackets completely shut out their opponent in a championship game.
Three players finished in double figures for the Yellowjackets. Leading them was Xavier Ridenour Xavier Ridenour 6'2" | CG Kingfisher | 2023 State OK with 15 points. Chase Davis Chase Davis 6'5" | SF Kingfisher | 2022 OK and Caden Kitchens added 14 and 10 respectively. For Victory Chrisitan, Joshua Udoumoh Joshua Udoumoh 6'4" | SG Victory Christian | 2022 State OK led all scorers with 19 points.
But it’s without a doubt the defense in the fourth quarter that will always stand out to us when we think about the 2022 state championship game. The Kingfisher dynasty will continue for at least another year. They won titles in 2017, 2019 and back to back now with 2021 and 2022. They have to replace Davis but he’s the only starter that graduates as the other four starters are juniors. Kingfisher ends another year on top and we’ll go ahead and say they’ll start next year on top as well.
