Check out my analysis on the top prospects that are left in the Texas 5A State Playoffs! In this article, we will check out the players who have been getting it done all season in the 6A Region 4 matchups featuring Veteran’s Memorial, Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial, Boerne Champion, and McAllen!

Veterans Memorial High School (San Antonio) vs Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial

Veterans Memorial High School (San Antonio):

Tyler Eguia 2023 6'0 Veterans Memorial High School (San Antonio)

Tyler is a sharp shooting guard who specializes in getting his shot off quick. He is great at getting set on the fast break and being an open passing option for his team. He has the ability to knock down shots from all three levels with ease, and even showed an ability to routinely knock down shots from the coveted fourth level of the floor. His ability to hit deep threes forces the defense to come out and focus on him 35 feet from the bucket. He punishes zone defense through his ability to get set from anywhere around the arc. Eugia has a high basketball IQ and it shows out on both ends of the floor. He is great at poking the ball free from ball handlers but specializes in reading the ball handlers eyes and taking away cross court passing opportunities.

William Navarro 2023 Veterans Memorial High School (San Antonio)

William is an athletic wing who is great at running the floor and putting pressure on the defense on the fast break. His long arms allow him to play intense on ball defense and surround ball handlers up. He worked hard to take away the high level shooting guards or wings on the other team by harassing them with and without the ball. By playing such stout defense on the perimeter, Navarro routinely leaks out and beats the other team down the floor as he finishes at the rim. I would like to see him work on becoming more dynamic with a live dribble, as well as working to create more shots for himself and his teammates when he attacks the paint.

Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial High School:

Jordyn Heard 2023 6'6 Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial High School

Jordyn is the do it all wing for Corpus Christi Veterans, and he plays his role to a very high level on both ends. Whether he is scoring 20 points, or collecting 12 rebounds or getting 4 steals, Heard is always affecting the game. His ability to turn defense into offense allows his team to run on the break and look to push the pace over other teams. Heard has very long arms which allow him to reject shots at the rim in a plethora of ways. Whether he is coming in on a chase down, or coming over from the weak side, Heard is always making his presence felt.

Champion High School (Boerne) vs McAllen High School

Champion High School (Boerne):

[player_tooltip player_id="1149309" first="Jesse" last="Peart"] 2022 6’4 Champion High School (Boerne)

Jesse was a standout point guard for his team for his ability to score at all three levels, create for his teammates and leading his team. His aggressiveness seemed to spark his teammates whenever he would attack the rim or get a tough bucket in the midrange. He is truly what makes this team go, and he has a bunch of talent to play off of him due to his unselfishness. He got to his spots in the midrange and beyond the arc with a live dribble and confidently rose up over defenders and scored at a high clip. He is aggressive and loves getting downhill and forcing the defense to collapse. His ability to fire cross court passes to his open teammates lead his team to a strong quarter finals appearance. Boerne Champion has a real shot of making a difference in the playoffs and I am excited to see what kind of run they go on!

[player_tooltip player_id="1159093" first="Braden" last="Baum"] 2023 6’6 Champion High School (Boerne)

Braden was a stand out shooting guard at the showcase for his ability to shoot the basketball from beyond the arc. He finished the tournament with eleven three pointers, and five in one game alone. When his shot did not consistently fall from the outside, he put the ball on the floor and could get to the mid range, attack the basket and move off the ball. He was willing to be the decoy on offense and allow his teammates to work on the back side. I would like to see him be more confident with a live dribble and work on creating for his teammates as he draws double teams, there were a few instances in which he could have made cross court passes but had to pass the ball around the arc.

Ryan Erdos 2024 6’7 Champion High School (Boerne)

Ryan is a massive player for such a young age, he has great size and strength that allows him to affect the other teams in the paint. He is a solid defender in the paint and really anchors the defense for Boerne Champion. He is a smart player in the mid post and can back down defenders and punish them in the lane. He is a strong rebounder who is good at keeping the ball high and away from defenders. I would like to see him work on his foot speed and ability to move laterally and with a live dribble. Once he begins to add that part to his game he will become an unstoppable force to be reckoned with in the paint.

McAllen High School

Kaharie Loggins 2023 6'4 McAllen High School

Kaharie is an athletic wing who specializes in turning defense into offense. His length allows him to harass ball handlers coming up the court, and at times poke the ball free and finish on the fast break. He provides the perfect spark off the bench that has the ability to flip a game around due to his ability to affect the game on both ends of the floor. His ability to rebound the ball, and quickly turn that into instant offense allows his team to run and gun constantly puts pressure on the other team with every missed shot they take. In their matchup against Champion, McAllen quickly fell behind 13-0, and Loggins jumped in and quickly brought them with 6. His length was great at making all of the skilled guards and wings of Champion uncomfortable. He is a high level rim protector for an undersized forward/ wing, and he is fearless and willing to contest everything at the bucket.

Danny Canul 2024 McAllen High School

Danny is a forward with great size and strength that loves to bully defenders underneath the basket. He is good at moving without the basketball, and his constant motion forces the defense to always have an eye on him, and it sometimes gives his teammates a glimmer of space to exploit. I would like to see him develop quicker feet and an ability to handle the basketball on the fast break. He has all of the strength to move defenders out of his way or simply go through them with a full head of steam. If he can become a bit more agile and able to avoid contact in the full court, he can become a dynamic scorer.
