We’re gradually filling out the 2024 rankings based on who we’ve seen during the summer and school year, plus statistics and reports from coaches across the state.

So far this crop of point guards has been playing at an elite level and making massive impacts on their high school and travel programs. Let’s look at some of the elite point guard talent in this class.

[player_tooltip player_id="1172929" first="Michael" last="Kates"], 5’9 PG, Maize South (Pictured): One part of a dynamic and young back court at Mazie South. Kates is a tremendous floor general with a terrific long ball which allows him to play off the ball as well. Moves tremendously well off the ball and off screens which gets him into advantages on the offensive end. With the ball in his hands his handle is as dynamic as they come and he can get down hill with ease. Very crafty player and finisher around the rim. Averaging 10.2 points and 2.4 assists per game. Has hit 26 threes on the year and over 80% from foul line.

[player_tooltip player_id="1270268" first="David" last="Cobin"], 5’10 PG, De Soto: Somewhat of a hidden gem in Kansas, Cobin is a top tier point guard on both the offensive and defensive end of the floor. Gets into ball handlers, can jump gaps, and rebounds it well for a point guard. On offense he can get by guys off the bounce, find shooters, and make plays in the painted area for himself as well. Had a terrific summer cut short with injury running with KC Spurs, but glad to see his high school season has him playing at a high level once again.

[player_tooltip player_id="1270290" first="Tesean" last="Williams"], 5’7 PG, Wichita Northwest: Another point guard who can flat out shoot the ball in this group. Has seen every statistical category take a nice jump in his sophomore campaign and got a great opportunity last year to contribute. Smaller guard at this point in his career, but his quickness, burst, and toughness allow him to make a ton of plays. Averaging 9.2 points, 2.2 assists, 3 rebounds, and 2 steals per game while shooting 40% from 3.

[player_tooltip player_id="1270291" first="Carter" last="Coombs"], 5’11 PG, Great Bend: Has fit into his new home in Great Bend and new role quite nice this season. Him and his high school program have started to gel nicely as we come down the home stretch that could bode well for the post season. Still a dynamic scorer and shooter, Coombs is also growing as a play maker for others and finding ways to get guys lob dunks, layups, and open threes.

[player_tooltip player_id="1270298" first="Josiah" last="Polynice"], 5’11 PG, Olathe South: Polynice’s time is coming on the Varsity stage. His grassroots work speaks for itself as he plays at an extremely high level. Waiting his turn behind some solid Olathe South Guards, once the keys are passed to Polynice, look for his dynamic playmaking and guard skill to start making noise.

[player_tooltip player_id="1270301" first="Peyton" last="Ryan"], 5’9 PG, Central Plains: Much like the Ryan’s who dominated at Central Plains in the past, Peyton has been doing more of the same. Averaging 17.3 points, 2.4 assists, 4.6 rebounds, and 3 steals per game. Great vision, handle, and understanding of the game help Ryan control ball games for his Plains program.
