John Carwie (5’10/Shooting Guard/2024)

In honor of Dickie V, who is out of broadcasting for the remainder of the year on ESPN as he deals with his health challenges, John can flat out stroke the rock BABY!!!! He finished with 14pts against Pelham and knocked down 4 treys, with a couple of shot attempts going halfway down and popping out. John fits the Mountain Brook system perfectly, as he is a hard-nose player on both ends of the court, plays D, and shoots the trey ball at a high percentage. I know many people believe that the philosophy of Mountain Brook is lay-up or 3-pieces, but John showed a nice floater in the contest. He played under control and never forced action.
He is a high IQ player that will find meaningful minutes on the varsity.
For a moment, I had a vision of seeing John along with the other snipers that Mountain Brook will have next year, and they have a chance to be one of Mountain Brook’s best shooting teams that the state has seen over the years. That, my friends, is a scary thought.

Austin is a long and lengthy post player that is developing overall. For the next phase of high school basketball, he will need to have a good off-season on the court and in the weight room. In the game I saw against Sylacauga, he displayed a nice touch around the rim.
His primary area of play on both ends of the court is in the paint, and he will need to expand his game out of the paint on both ends.
He has the acumen to play the post on the varsity level, but the game is much faster and stronger, both areas he will need to improve. He was active on the boards, got to the line, and finished with 8pts.
Matthew Scarbrough (5’8/Combo Guard/2024)
School: Pelham HS

I have not seen many JV games this season, but Matthew was one of the players that impressed me with his playmaking abilities. He handles the ball well and creates off the bounce. He has a good feel for the game and plays at a nice pace. He is a heady PG that sees the game well, and because of that, he often finds himself a step or two ahead of his opponents. He is a true facilitator, and he got his teammates involved and was the driver of his team’s success against Mortimer Jordan.
His on-ball defense caused problems for his opponents as he forced several turnovers, and he was one of few that I have seen that plays help and the passing lane as well as he does.
He finished the game with 6pts, but the stat sheet does not contain the true impact that he had on his team. He will have to get stronger as he steps onto the varsity next year.
Carson Romero (6’0/Combo Guard/2024)
School: Mountain Brook HS

I have been around Carson’s game for several years, seeing his development and maturation. He has turned into a solid PG that knows how to run the show. The Mountain Brook offense, along with the constant substitution pattern, requires PGs that can keep things on track and keep players focused on their assignments when they come in the game. Carson showed that he handles the role of the PG in the Mountain Brook system very well. As a floor general, he has good vision and makes on-time and on-target passes.
His passing accuracy is one of the best I have seen on the JV level.
He is tough off the bounce, as he gets downhill quickly and makes good decisions when creating off the bounce. The Mountain Brook tenacious defense starts with the lead guard, and Carson is fully bought into the system of making his opponent work for every inch that he takes on the court. Carson is one of the rising young talents set to make an impact on varsity next year. He finished the contest against Pelham with 10pts.
Zac Burns (5’10/Shooting Guard/2024)
School: Mortimer Jordan HS

Zac fits nicely into the system that he will be stepping up into on varsity next year, and that is shooting the trey ball. He is good in his c&s opportunities, and I would have liked to see Zac shoot the ball more. He has a nice stroke, and he can definitely knock down the trey ball, as he knocked down two big ones in the contest against Pelham.
He finished with 10pts, but I genuinely believe he left a lot of more points on the court because he did not shoot the ball as much as he probably should.
Now I am speaking from an evaluator vantage point, and I am not privileged to his coach’s gameplan. Zac needs to have a good off-season in the weight room and on the court working on his handles and creating his shot off the bounce, as teams will run him off the line at the varsity level.
