Clear Lake, SD - Before tonight’s game the Bulldogs from De Smet had a 5-1 record. The Cardinals from Deuel came into the game with a 3-1 record. De Smet plays in Class B and they are in Region3B. Deuel is an A team that plays in Region 2A. De Smet is ranked #1 in Class B.

This one was close for the first few minutes of the game. It did not take long for the Bulldogs to take over and show everyone, why they are the #1 Ranked Team in Class B. De Smet, had too much firepower, size, skill, and athleticism for the Cardinals. I did like that Deuel never backed down and they battled all night. Read below for information on the top players from both teams. In the fourth quarter, both teams sat the starters on the bench and it went very fast with a running clock. Good luck to the Bulldogs and the Cardinals with the rest of the season!

Scores

1st - De Smet 22 Deuel 10

2nd - De Smet 44 Deuel 24

3rd - De Smet 64 Deuel 35

4th (final) - De Smet 74 Deuel 37

Top Bulldogs

[player_tooltip player_id="812196" first="Kalen" last="Garry"] (2022) |6-3 G|

25 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, three 3-pointers, and 4 steals. The SDSU commit shined again tonight. Kalen finished in traffic and he showed excellent hang time. He had many tough finishes at the basket. When shooting the triple, Kalen hit it when pulling up and when catching and shooting. I liked how Garry posted up and finished with his left hand. He had multiple steals that Kalen turned into points on the other end. Garry had multiple AND1 finishes, these showed off his strength. His spin move was spectacular. I liked how hard his passes were, Garry had a sharp diagonal pass that threaded the needle. I was very impressed with his left-handed passes. He scores all over the court, and Kalen showed his shooting range with a 25-foot bomb. We all know this but [player_tooltip player_id="812196" first="Kalen" last="Garry"] is a DUDE.

[player_tooltip player_id="968174" first="Tory" last="Holland"] (2022) |6-2 F|

17 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, and three 3-pointers. He was hot early and took over the game. Tory got the scoring started for the Bulldogs. Holland looks to be an excellent in-rhythm 3-point shooter. He is also an athletic slasher and finisher. Tory scored the first 5 points for De Smet. Holland also looked good scoring in transition. I was impressed with his offensive rebound tip-in basket. I really liked Holland’s shooting mechanics and how he steps into his shot with proper footwork and rhythm. Tory had a very nice game tonight.

[player_tooltip player_id="812211" first="Rett" last="Osthus"] (2022) |6-1 PG|

1 point, 6 rebounds, and 1 assist. He has great ball skills. I loved the way Rett pushed the tempo in transition. He looks to be a lockdown on-ball defender. This athlete is a slasher and a playmaker. Osthus showed an amazing full-court baseball pass. Rett is a coast-to-coast player. He is very fast in the open court. ’

[player_tooltip player_id="963766" first="Damon" last="Wilkinson"] (2023) |6-9 C|

13 points, 5 rebounds, and 1 block. I loved how he high-pointed the ball when rebounding. When the ball was close to Wilkinson, he looked like a vacuum on the boards. Damon showed his strength with an AND1 finish against a double team, he cashed the FT after. He showed great touch with a 1-handed short jumper. To start the second half, Damon showed a sweet turn-around baby hook shot. I liked the looks of his drop-step. He is a valuable rim protector for the Bulldogs. The Cardinals had nobody that could match Damon’s size and length.

Kadyn Fast (2024) |6-1 G|

6 points, 2 assists, and 1 steal. I loved his screen and slip in the first half. The defense was worried about Garry and Fast slipped to the basket for a wide-open score. Later in the game, Kadyn scored in a fullcourt transition situation. He showed excellent hang time and body control when finishing.

Colt Wilkinson (2022) |6-1 G/F|

2 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists. He looks to be a strong and tough player. Colt looked good with an offensive rebound and a stick-back basket.

George Jensen (2024) |6-4 F|

5 points, 1 rebound, and 1 assist. He has a very nice and crafty finish at the cup after he weaved through traffic. I liked Jensen’s aggressiveness around the basket. Late in the game, George had a nice lefty finger roll finish after he split two defenders.

Top Cardinals

[player_tooltip player_id="1227970" first="Gavin" last="Benck"] (2023) |6-2 F|

13 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, and 3-3 FT's. He got his scoring going with a short baseline jumper. Benck had the first field goal of the game. Gavin scored off an O-board putback and with a clever fake handoff and attack. I really liked how Benck used his left hand at the iron. He looked really good attacking from the baseline. Gavin showcased an awesome behind-the-back move and a silky smooth lefty finish. Benck is aggressive and he gets to the line often. Benck has the skills and potential to be a very serious player this season.

Zane Bingham (2022) |6-3 C|

3 points, 6 rebounds, and 1 block. He is a physical player that is not afraid of contact. Bingham looks to be a confident FT shooter. Zane had an impressive block against the Bulldogs big man. I liked his effort tonight.

Dravyn Carlson (2023) |6-1 G|

5 points and 5 rebounds. He has the potential to be a very nice player. Carlson can shoot and hit the 3-ball. He has a nice stroke. Carlson made impressive cuts tonight. I liked how he attacked the rim and got to the line. On defense, Dravyn showed excellent timing with a blocked shot.

Cooper Schiernbeck (2022) |5-10 G|

8 points, 1 rebound, and 1 assist. He made a FT before the game started because De Smet picked up a T before the game started. Cooper has nice handles with many moves. He is a quick kid that can hit the 3-ball. I liked that Cooper was not afraid to attack the basket against bigger players. His quick hands stripped the ball from a potential scorer.

[player_tooltip player_id="1270651" first="Trey" last="Maaland"] (2024) |6-1 G|

2 points, 2 rebounds, and 1 assist. I liked how Trey attacked and kicked to shooters. He had a nice drive down the middle of the lane for a tough finish. Trey looks great at using his body to protect the ball. He showed a dirty hesitation move along with many other skilled moves.

Naethan Lovre (2022) |5-9 G|

2 points and 4 rebounds. He showed a smooth pull-up J in the 3rd quarter. Lovre is a hustler that grabbed loose balls and long rebounds. Naethan is a lefty with a nice mid-range game. On defense, Lovre showed anticipation skills when picking off passes.

Brayden Simon (2023) |5-11 G|

2 points and 1 rebound. He looks to have good handles. Brayden is a quick and shifty guard. I liked how Simon came off a ball screen and the way he attacked the rim. This led to Brayden getting fouled and to him nailing FT's.
