LA VERNE, CA—Despite a surge of Covid over the Southland, the Classic at Damien persevered with some outstanding games and talent galore—especially the underclassmen. There were some senior standouts like Colorado State-bound Jack Payne (Owyhee/ID) and Fresno State-bound [player_tooltip player_id="1176080" first="Joseph" last="Hunter"] (Damien) as well as some scintillating underclassmen like 2024 Vyctorius Miller (Crean Lutheran) and 2025 Jovani Ruff (LB Poly).

2023, WF, 6-foot-5, 175 pounds

Joel’s Take: Brown is a lengthy 4/3 with a nice stroke out to the 22-feet. His release is a bit mechanical, but he has his elbow in and his shot has a consistent soft landing. He can shoot it off the catch or with an up-fake. He faces-up nicely on the perimeter and is fundamenally sound (uses the Triple Threat). He’ll rebound as well and has an overall good feel for the game.

2023, SG, 6-foot-1, 170 pounds

Joel’s Take: This lefty has an uncanny ability to get into the lane and finish through contact. The chiseled left-hander has a solid first step, can carry defenders on his hip, and can finish with either hand. His jump shot needs to get more consistent, but it needs to get more dependable going forward.

Gerald Perry Jr (San Joaquin Memorial)

2025, SG, 6-foot-2, 160 pounds

Joel’s Take: In the couple of games I witnessed Perry showed the frame, athleticism, and evolving skill set to be a college prospect in the future. He plays with a good pace, shows good ball skills, and he’s quick. He can defend both guard positions and he exhibits active hands. Looking forward to his growth and development in the coming seasons.

Nathan Mattera (Los Osos)

2023, SG, 6-foot-3, 170 pounds

Joel’s Take: Mattera is a rangy athlete who possesses a scorer’s mentality. He has long arms, has good quickness, and he gets nice lift on his shot. His first step is solid and his mid-range pull-up is tight. He plays with a high motor and he has a frame that should fill out nicely going forward.
