2022 is here and Nebraska basketball athletes are now gearing up for state. It’s one of those seasons where it feels like magic is in the air. Week 6 was full of highlights and great games between teams pushing to qualify for the state playoffs. Below I will share with you what I was able to observe in week six of Nebraska boys high school varsity basketball season.

Bellevue East Chieftains vs Skutt Catholic Skyhawks

This was a matchup between Class A (Chieftains) and Class B (Skyhawks). Skutt Catholic has an amazing atmosphere and even prays before the game’s national anthem. The Skyhawks would come out of the tip-off ready to play. [player_tooltip player_id="1023540" first="James" last="Gninefou"] is a 6’2" senior guard for Skutt that has proven more than enough that he can ball. He gets to the basket, he moves without the ball, and he brings tough energy. Also for the Skyhawks, I’d like to mention [player_tooltip player_id="1150945" first="JJ" last="Ferrin"]. Ferrin is a junior guard that has a game-time jump shot meaning he isn’t shy to pull the trigger in front of a crowd. He really opens up the floor for his teammates to resemble their strengths as well. The Skyhawks would defeat the Bellevue East 70-42. I think it’s safe to say Skutt could play just as well in Class A. Jacob Perrin (sophomore guard) went three for six from downtown for the Chieftains.

Creighton Prep Junior Jays vs Millard South Patriots

Both teams would come out strong and represent their programs very well. [player_tooltip player_id="1013230" first="Will" last="Cooper"] (Millard South) had 24 points but the Patriots were outscored every quarter except the first. Austin Trotter (Millard South) sparked some interest. He scored 6 points of 50% shooting and left me with the feeling he should be a tad bit more aggressive. The shots he made looked great. For Creighton Prep, [player_tooltip player_id="981701" first="Luke" last="Jungers"] put on a plethora of offensive skills down in the post. He plays very well with his back to the basket, has excellent footwork, and plays on the perimeter. [player_tooltip player_id="1235576" first="Martel" last="Evans"] played the role of a poised point guard. He really played with a high IQ all night and did well-making adjustments as needed. Prep would win 67-55. It was a very exciting game to watch from start to finish.

Elkhorn South Storm vs Omaha South Packers

This game was the longest game in Class A history. Elkhorn South would come out winners in a game that went 4 overtimes. Even Werner (Elkhorn South) hit a three with 5 seconds left to tie the game 59-59 at the end of regulation. The two teams would go on to battle an additional 20 minutes and Elkhorn south would end up winning 106-102.
