One of my favorite events of the year, the CHC is in remembrance of Chance Harmon, who at 8 years old passed away from a rare cancer and this event honors him while also raising money for child cancer research.
The event brings the whole town out as well as most of western VA, and is a really special day of basketball run by some very good people. There were tons of talented players and great basketball throughout the day, and it was another successful year to help “Give Others a Chance.”
Here’s a look at part one of the 2023 standouts from the event.
Ryan Steger Ryan Steger 6'2" | SG James River (Buchanan) | 2023 State VA | 6’1” WG | James River (Buchanan)
Steger is a one of three James River players that finished in double figures in their blowout win over Carroll County, and he was the winner of the 3 Point Contest as well. The 6’1” two guard is a lights out shooter from deep, but it’s really his ability to move off of the basketball and make good cuts to get easy shots from multiple levels that makes him so hard to guard. He finished with 12 points in the win.
Lawrence Cole | 6’1” CG | Northside
Cole had one of the most impressive outings of anyone in the event, as the 6’1” guard went bananas for Northside in their blowout win over EC Glass. Cole showed a little bit of everything as he scored it well off the bounce in the midrange, showed he can catch and shoot and was excellent in transition showing good finishing ability and good athleticism to play at and above the rim. He finished with 30 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals in the win.
Oumaundre Harris | 5’9” CG | EC Glass
While Glass lost by 19 to Northside, they did show good fight and a solid comeback effort after trailing by 28 at half, and Harris was a huge reason as he competed and made plays on both ends of the floor. A high motor and scrappy combo guard, he turned ball handlers over and got after it defensively, he got in the lane and finished and got to the free throw line often, he rebounded well for his size and showed the ability to score it in bunches. He finished with 23 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals in the loss.
Aidan Treacy | 6’0” WG | EC Glass
Treacy was the other one who brought it for Glass in the second half, as he had a couple of runs showing his ability to score it in a number of different ways. He’s crafty off the bounce and knows how to get to spots and make shots, he finished well in the midrange and at the rim and he played with a good motor on both ends. He finished with 14 points and 4 rebounds in the loss.
Samuel Duncan | 6’1” WG | Auburn
Duncan is a new name to keep an eye on in the 540, as the two guard is a talented shot maker and stepped up big for Auburn when they needed him to in the second half. The 6’1” two guard showed the ability to move off the ball and get open, he made shots consistently from deep and showed good confidence throughout the game. He finished with 18 points making 4 three-pointers in the loss.
