Three Up
Sauk Centre (6-0). This is a bit of a questionable call as I did have them second in their section but at the same time, this is a team that is short and was just three games over .500 last year. They are undefeated to start the year allowing only 41 points a game – top four in Class AA – and they have quality wins over Legacy Christian and Albany. Star sophomore Jay Neubert Jay Neubert 6'2" | SG Sauk Centre | 2024 State MN has a nice group around him including senior Macoy Thiesen, junior Matthew Warring, and sophomore Ethan Riley Ethan Riley 6'1" | SG Sauk Centre | 2024 State MN .
Montevideo (4-1). Before the season Coach Derek Webb talked about the value of experienced seniors returning and he’s been dead on. The Thunder Hawks had a couple tough years including last years’s 5-13 team but the experience is paying off beating all four opponents (ACGC, New London-Spicer, MACCRAY, and Minnewaska Area) by double digits. Mason Jerve and Kaiden Boike have helped the team to the great start.
Minneapolis Edison (5-0). Ahmil Jahad continues to take Edison to higher places of consistency. Edison leads Class AA in scoring earning double figure wins over Holy Angels, Holy Family, Saint Anthony, and others. Micah Young Micah Young 6'3" | SF Minneapolis Edison | 2023 State MN and his 27.5 points a game has been one of the best stories in the state so far and the guard duo of senior Liban Tuschar and sophomore Deidrick Taylor have been excellent together.
Three Down
Melrose (2-4). The Dutchmen have been so good for so long that a dip should not be that surprising when they lost seven of their top eight guys. Defensively the team is still quite tough but offensively they’ve had a tough time stringing runs together consistently. They’ve had a couple rough outings although most games have been and will be competitive. They are in the St. Cloud Cathedral tournament this week.
Litchfield (2-4). Pretty much everything I just said about Melrose goes for the Dragons of Litchfield as well. That said, like Melrose, it’s a “better to get them early” type of situation. Litchfield’s first game was quite ugly giving up 91 points BUT they’ve allowed 53 points or less in the five games since. The Dragons have won two of the last three as well so like we said, get them early as they are likely to come back at you.
Minnehaha Academy (1-3). Another “get them know” type of situation. The Redhawks lost to Minneapolis North and Eastview – two highly ranked teams – which most teams will do. The surprise was the loss to St. Louis Park in overtime last week. Mercy Miller Mercy Miller 6'4" | SG Minnehaha Academy | 2024 VA has missed the last two games but he should be back sometime soon. Minnehaha will need him considering they are in the tough East Ridge tournament followed by games with Park Center, Tonka, and Wayzata.
