The high school basketball season is underway in the state of North Carolina. Take a look at the NCHSAA 2A Contenders in the first edition of the Contender Series.

Farmville Central

It’s hard to pick against a squad that’s won three straight state titles. They’re 4-0 already in 2021-22 with wins over N Lenoir and Broughton already. As always they get after it defensively, which makes for exciting basketball. [player_tooltip player_id="854917" first="Jah" last="Short"], [player_tooltip player_id="577839" first="Derrick" last="Cox"] and [player_tooltip player_id="1076368" first="Alex" last="Moye"] are a few headliners for this year’s group. They’ll be tough once again this season.

RS-Central

RS-Central has been a pleasant surprise already on the 2A level with a recent victory over AC Reynolds this past Friday. They’ll face them again on 12/8 but before that Kings Mountain on Tuesday and Mountain Heritage on Friday in a busy game-week for them. Aaron Cuthbertson is a senior name to know while 2025 big man prospect [player_tooltip player_id="1164550" first="Zymicah" last="Wilkins"] is one to know in the frontcourt.

JF Webb

Unsigned senior Javon Bullock is on a tear for JF Webb as is junior guard [player_tooltip player_id="1059713" first="Markeevis" last="Latta"]. They’re a solid 1-2 combination that play well together and share the ball with their veteran squad. They’re off to a 4-1 start with Oxford Prep (12/7) and Granville Central (12/10) on the slate this week.

Lincoln Charter

They’re just 5-3 as they adjust to [player_tooltip player_id="1008884" first="JJ" last="Moore"] in the rotation but Lincoln Charter boasts quite the backcourt with Moore and [player_tooltip player_id="1029276" first="Marcus" last="Farley Jr"] leading the charge. They’ve won three games in a row and counting with West Caldwell (12/7) and Lincolnton (12/10) on the schedule this week. They’ll be fun to watch once the conference portion of the schedule arrives. 2023 guard Elijah Burnett is another name to keep an eye on.

North Surry

[player_tooltip player_id="951363" first="Jahreece" last="Lynch"] and [player_tooltip player_id="1257255" first="James" last="McCreary"] are another backcourt duo to keep an eye on in the 2023 class at North Surry. They play well together on both ends of the floor and have built quite the chemistry together. They’re off to a 2-0 start to 2021-22 with West Stokes (12/7) and Wilkes Central (12/10) on the schedule this week.
