I was very impressed with the way Sioux Valley pushed the tempo all game long. They did it mainly by passing instead of pounding the rock which was even more impressive for a JV squad. It was a very fast-paced game with high energy. The Cossacks had control of the game for most of it but it was competitive the entire way. It was fun to get in the gym early and see some of the up-and-comers for both teams. Look below for the standouts from both teams.

Top Watchdogs
Jon Delay (2024) |6-0 G|
11 pts, three 3-pointers. He hit a triple to start the scoring for the game. Delay is a slim and wily guard that handles the ball well. Jon hit multiple triples and he looks to be a smooth shooter,
Jestin Wurth (2023) |6-5 C|
12 pts, 2-3 ft’s. He is a big strong low-post player. Wurth did a nice job on the boards. He finished well around the basket and scored off BLOB’s. I liked Jestin’s hustle and effort on an O-board putback. He had a smooth finish after coming across the lane from a cross-screen. I liked his hustle when trying to save a ball from going out of bounds.
Cooper Nelson (2025) |6-0 PF|
6 pts, 2-3 ft’s. He is another big strong post player for the Watchdogs. He shoots it with a soft touch. Cooper had an athletic steel in fullcourt that he finished with his left hand.
Aidan Hamm (2025) |5-10 G|
7 pts, one 3-pointer. He showed a quick 3-point shot after a broken play that he nailed in rhythm. He also had another jumper that showcased his quick feet.
Top Cossacks
Connor Gross (2023) |6-0 G|
18 pts, 3-4 ft’s, one 3-pointer. He was one of the best in the game. Gross was great a making the extra pass or throwing the fullcourt pass to push the tempo. He is an athletic player that forced many turnovers. Connor had many athletic finishes in transition. He had an impressive backhand finish in traffic. I liked how he posted up on a BLOB and got a bucket. He also had nice touch passes and a sharp pass across the lane to an open teammate. An overall impressive performance for Mr. Gross.
Jace Christensen (2024) |5-9 G|
16 pts. He is an athletic kid that had many fast paced finishes in transition. I like how crisp his passes were. Jace had many steals that resulted in baskets in transition for the Cossacks. Christensen had many great cuts and he showed a quick jumper. He ran the floor like a cheetah.
Maverick Nelson Maverick Nelson 6'3" | SG Sioux Valley | 2025 State SD (2025) |6-2 G|
12 pts, two 3-pointers. He impressed me with an athletic finish after slashing through the defense. I also liked how he attacked the defense but pulled up short for a soft floater. Nelson showed a smooth and quick crossover. Maverick had a timely 3-pointer to end the third quarter. Later in the game he had another runner in traffic after contact, it could of been an AND1. He has a nice game for a 9th grader.
Hudsyn Ruesink Hudsyn Ruesink 6'5" | SF Sioux Valley | 2024 State SD (2024) |6-3 F|
11 pts, 1/1 ft’s. This tough kid lost a tooth early in the game and still finished the contest! Ruesink shoots it with a very soft touch. He has a nose for the ball when rebounding. I loved how he hustled and dove on the floor for 50/50 balls. I was impressed with how he sealed against the zone. Hudsyn kept the ball high when he got it in the lane so pesky defenders could not get their hands on it. Ruesink had a strong AND1 finish in the fourth quarter and cashed in the FT. You can tell Hudsyn knows the game well. He has a bright future.
