Continue ReadingThe Earl McKee Classic was back this season after taking a year off due to covid last year. The event never missed a beat, as high level teams squared off. Benton Harbor ruled the day and powered through the classic with a 2-0 record, both being impressive victories. There was high level talent to be seen from multiple teams. In the midst of the talent on display, 5 players and performances stood out to me at the event.
Grant Gondrezick Grant Gondrezick 6'2" | PG Benton Harbor | 2023 State MI (2022, PG, Benton Harbor)
Gondrezick has one of the highest, if not THE highest, basketball IQ’s in Michigan. He was lights out in a 74-50 win over Ottawa Hills. Gondrezick finished with 23 points in the game. To me, hi looks like a high level lead guard that can guide an offense at the next level.
Derrick King Jr. (2024, CG, Ottawa Hills)
King’s team was defeated by Benton Harbor, but he scratched and clawed to keep them in it. King is a slippery guard that plays with very high energy. He had 20 points in the contest. King is a high level prospect that should be jumping on to college coaches radars.
Trucel Singleton Trucel Singleton 6'0" | CG Benton Harbor | 2022 State MI (2022, CG, Benton Harbor)
Singleton continues to prove himself as an elite perimeter player in the state. He went off and caught fire as a big shot maker against Detroit University Prep, scorching the nets for over 30 points. Singleton added an impressive 16 point outing against Ottawa Hills.
Xander Wedlow Xander Wedlow 6'9" | PF University Prep | 2024 State MI (2024, PF, Detroit University Prep)
Wedlow looks like on of the state’s top young post prospects. He was explosive off the ground and did a great job setting the tone in the paint. Wedlow notched a double-double with 25 points and 14 rebounds in tough loss to Benton Harbor. Wedlow will be a must see prospect by the time it’s all said and done.
James York (2022, CG, Berrien Springs)
York was impressive in a loss to the Grand Rapids Angels. The game was highly entertaining and York was a big part of that. He was tough to stop off the dribble and was super aggressive on the offensive end. York finished with 29 points.
