High school hoops is back in Texas!

There are talented prospects at every position waiting for their turn to lead their team to the UIL state championship in District 5 of 6A Region II Division 11. It’s going to be really fun seeing which team comes out of South Dallas, a very competitive region with dynamic guards.

Challengers beware, in order to take the crown teams will first have to contend with the defending champs at Duncanville High School and their killer back-court. And that’s not even mentioning if [player_tooltip player_id="889576" first="Anthony" last="Black"] returns from suspension this season. If that happens...watch out.

With an eye for the future, here are some seniors to keep an eye on this season:

[player_tooltip player_id="889576" first="Anthony" last="Black"] | 2022 | 6’7’’ Point Guard | Duncanville HS – Black is sure to contest the ruling of ineligibility which followed him from his transfer from Coppell High School. If he is cleared to play, Duncanville is sure to repeat as champions behind Black’s elite combination of athleticism and high IQ. His size and speed allow him to finish through contact when driving to the hoop as well as make the right pass vis-a-vis high decision-making ability.

[player_tooltip player_id="958896" first="CJ" last="Ford"] | 2022 | 6’0’’ Point Guard | Duncanville HS – 2020’s Defensive Player of the Year, Ford is a bull as an on-ball defender. Although a bit undersized at the next level, he plays every possession with a chip on his shoulder. Ford should be a bigger focal point of the offense this year and should maximize a smooth three-point stroke and quick off the dribble pull-ups in mid-range.

[player_tooltip player_id="958563" first="Caden" last="Powell"] | 2022 | 6’10’’ Center | Waco Midway HS – Powell is a double-double expert with the size and strength to box out and clear lanes for rebounds. The big man is nimble and possesses good footwork. He reacts quickly in transition or in half courts sets to what the defense gives him, letting the center use his quickness and reflexes to score under the basket.

Davin Skyes | 2022 | 6’10’’ Shooting Guard | Duncanville HS – Even without Black, Duncanville will start one of the state’s best backcourts. Skyes plays to his name, a long, mobile wing who towers above competition his age. The kid just seems one step ahead of the defense in transition. As well, his wingspan allows him to lock down opposing players and snatch steals within the passing lanes.

[player_tooltip player_id="1052081" first="Devyn" last="Franklin"] | 2022 | 6’8’’ Small Forward | Waxahachie HS – Displayed an ability o thrive in the two-man game, as he did with teammate Vzarion Roberson last season. Franklin possesses an ultra-quick release on his turn-around jumper and at 6’8, has the ability to shoot over defenders making for a difficult cover.

[player_tooltip player_id="958618" first="Cole" last="Reid"] | 2022 | 6’9’’ Power Forward | Waco Midway HS – Efficient finisher under the basket, with an array of moves in his bag. Can score with his back to the basket or facing his defender. Good offensive rebounder who can be depended on for putbacks off misses. Can hit the set shot from 15 feet out.

[player_tooltip player_id="1052073" first="Jason" last="Justice"] | 2022 | 6’0’’ Point Guard | Cedar Hill HS – Very fast on the break in transition. Justice utilizes a lighting quick first step to break down defenses and get to his spots in the paint. Can get hot from the perimeter as he did against Mansfield last season when he hit three three-pointers.

[player_tooltip player_id="1205199" first="Prince" last="Banks"] | 2022 | 6’1’’ Point Guard | Waxahachie HS – Banks is willing to do all the little things to help his team win. He is constantly pressuring defenses in passing lanes and as a second helper on double teams and traps. Has a knack for eliciting steals behind an endless motor.
