Another Saturday in November not only meant we’re a week closer to the regular season starting. It also meant another big day of scrimmages as teams prepare for the season. On Saturday morning, Edmond Santa Fe played host to an event featuring potential 6A and 4A challengers. Here’s a look at a few players that stood out.
JV Seat JV Seat 6'3" | SF Edmond Memorial | 2022 State #250 Nation OK , 6’3 2022 Guard, Edmond Memorial
Consistency is what makes the Abilene Christian signee stand apart. In the opening scrimmage against Heritage Hall, Seat picked apart the Chargers defense with a combination of high IQ scoring and passing. When he went down low and drew double teams, he didn’t force a shot and instead kicked it out to the open man. When given good shot opportunities on the perimeter he made the next pass to an open teammate for an even better look. But when presented with mismatches or higher percentage opportunities he attacked and scored with efficiency.
Seat of course still had his bully ball type scores down low, but mixed with his improved handling and overall “want to” he’s a complete player that impacts the game in multiple ways. The senior will be the focal point of the Bulldogs this winter, and it’ll likely be rare that he disappoints for them.
Cam Mathis Cam Mathis 6'5" | SG Enid | 2022 State OK , 6’5 2022 Wing, Enid
A good athlete, Mathis looked best against Bethany. In that game he was willing to take it inside and was successful at mixing it up with the taller Woolridge down low. His scrappiness is a good sign for him longterm, as with basketball being smaller along he could potentially contribute as a small ball 4 potential at the next level. Along with being a scrappy player, he showed promise as a player capable to put the ball on the floor as a driver.
Taye Sullivan Taye Sullivan 6'3" | SG Enid | 2022 State OK , 6’4 2022 Guard, Enid
Another player with great fundamentals, Sullivan excels as spot up threat from beyond the arc. But hard work is evident in his game, with his craftiness to pull up or attack the rim when chased off the line. Offensive, Sullivan shares some similarities with the aforementioned Seat, as the Enid Plainsman could potentially be one of the more efficient offensive players in the state this winter. They also share similarities in having stronger frames. While Seat has fully maximized his upside by transforming his body, Sullivan is still in the process of doing so. While looking quicker already Sullivan, must continue on that path to be a perimeter player at the next level.
Caylen Goff-Brown Caylen Goff-Brown 6'2" | PG Tulsa Central | 2022 State OK , 6’3 2022 Guard, Tulsa Central
The Tulsa Central Brave is seemingly in range from the second he passes halfcourt. This is best evident as a spot up threat. When his feet are sat and he gets a clear look at the hoop, odds are the shot is going in. To go along with his prolific spot up talents, there were flashes of ability to pull up and create for himself as a shooter.
The evolution of his overall game was impressive. He showed better instincts as a playmaker and better decision making as a driver. Goff-Brown was also more locked in on defense, showing improved quickness when harassing opposing ball handlers. He even slid over and took a good charge, which was another great sign of his willingness to buy in.
Michal Woolridge, 6’8 2022 Center, Bethany
Worked primarily in the low post, where he excelled at back to the basket scoring. While also using his size advantage to basically play volleyball at the rim and dominate on the glass. Especially on the offensive end. At times he got opportunities to work in the high post and from there he showed his excellent passing ability. He hit cutters with perfect passes, or good longer pass to players open on the perimeter. Long term, the Oklahoma Southeastern signee needs to continue to work on his lateral agility. That improvement would help him with more fluid low post moves and being a more versatile defender.
Sebastian Perry Sebastian Perry 6'1" | PG Heritage Hall | 2023 State OK , 6’1 2023 Guard, Heritage Hall
Perry continues to be a good all around guard, especially from a shooting standpoint. More than just a long range specialist, he was able to work in the midrange off good dribble pull ups. The junior looks ready for a strong season shouldering a hefty amount of the scoring burden for the Chargers.
Rashaud Smith Rashaud Smith 6'1" | SG Heritage Hall | 2024 State OK , 6’0 2024 Guard, Heritage Hall
Adding some pace to the Chargers’ attack was this quick sophomore guard. Like many younger players, he looked best in transition when he was able to use his athletic advantages to play freely. But he was also still able to his use his suddenness to pressure the defense in the halfcourt. As this young player matures, he could be the key to fully unlocking the Chargers’ offense this winter.
