Even though Class B and C have begun in Louisiana, we are still previewing positions and other classes here on the Prep Hoops Louisiana page. This time, I will take a look at the shooting guards in the class of 2023. There are a few that the state, and college coaches, need to keep their eye on as the season begins.

[player_tooltip player_id="1130799" first="Brandon" last="Rodgers"] (6’4" | Zachary) - I am not going to say he burst on the scene because I do not get down south all the time. However, his performance during the 5A championship game was pretty impressive. Rodgers (or Rodgers-Hardy) can slash, shoot, and defend. He can attack the rim with the best of them as well. Rodgers is a "3 & D" player who has potential to be a top three player in the state and be nationally ranked. If his game reaches another level from the perimeter, I do not know if Zachary loses a game this year. He makes them that good.

[player_tooltip player_id="970108" first="Corey" last="Skillman"] (6’4" | Brother Martin) - Skillman has improved from his freshman campaign a great deal. While he can put it on the deck more now, he is still one of the state’s best flamethrowers. As he showed during The Statement Session, Corey is able to pull on the break from the mid-range or spot-up opposite of penetration. He is an offensive weapon that Brother Martin will need to compete for a district title of Division championship.

[player_tooltip player_id="1055173" first="Robert" last="Youngblood"] (6’3" | Dutchtown) - Youngblood has been a "3 & D" player since he put on a Dutchtown or LivOn Fleur-de-Lis uniform. He plays well off penetration and is constantly moving on offense. Robert relocates to shooting areas and is good on the offensive and defensive boards. On the defensive end, he takes on all challenges while (again) using his feet to make plays. His skill in reading passing lanes helps him gain turnovers as well. Look for the Dutchtown guard to be a top guard in 5A going into this season.

[player_tooltip player_id="970130" first="Courtney" last="McCarthy"] (6’4" | Richwood) - McCarthy will probably transition to more of point guard during the season because he does know how to handle the rock. When he plays off the ball, McCarthy is a monster on the boards and attacks from the wings on the regular. He is as tough as they get at the two and is as versatile as any guard at that position.

[player_tooltip player_id="1275327" first="Elliot" last="McQuillan"] (6’2" | Port Allen) - McQuillan had a great summer for Showtime Elite shooting the ball from the arc. He was automatic from the corners downing three or more treys during the Finale weekend. The three ball opened up his ability to get to the rim and he finished big time with dunks and layups over longer and taller players. McQuillan is a possible D1 player who can definitely hurt teams from deep. His play may indeed help Port Allen to a third straight 2A title.

[player_tooltip player_id="970126" first="Omarion" last="Layssard"] (6’3" | Northwood-Lena) - Layssard is one of the most athletic two guards that we have in the Boot. His explosion to the rim is very impressive and if defenders are not careful, he will put them in the rim as well. Layssard has improved from three as well which makes him more dangerous. He is part of a dangerous 1-2 punch with [player_tooltip player_id="1213563" first="Randarius" last="Morris"]. Both players will be looking to lead the Gators back to Marsh Madness with hopes of walking away with a state titlte this time.

[player_tooltip player_id="1130807" first="Devin" last="Myers"] (6’4" | Huntington) - When I look at Myers, he is the prototype two guard. He has a thin build with long arms to his knees. When Myers gets into a defensive stance, he stretches out to about seven feet. Myers can block a shot on one end and then beat other players to the opposite end and finish. His elevation is ridiculous and he can dunk on anyone. Myers falls into the "3 & D" category at the two guard and is a player that will continue to improve.

[player_tooltip player_id="970124" first="Juvian" last="Keys"] (6’2" | Wossman) - During the month of team camp play, Keys was one of the best players I saw this summer. He can get to the rim with the dribble and he is good at spotting up in the mid-range. The transfer from Neville is another weapon to the Wossman arsenal who can take over a game when given a chance. Look to Keys to be a spark off the bench when Wossman plays this season in NELA.

[player_tooltip player_id="1130805" first="Fredtravious" last="Benjamin"] (6’2" | Green Oaks) - The Giants have an under-the-radar shooting guard who does everything. He defends the best wing on the other team and often leads the team in scoring. Benjamin is a two guard who knows how to attack his areas on the floor where he is most successful. He should lead the Giants in scoring this season and be a serious threat for one of the best players in northwest Louisiana.

Other Shooting guards to keep on the radar:

[player_tooltip player_id="1130801" first="Zion" last="McCoy"] (6’2" | Northside)

[player_tooltip player_id="1130802" first="Amir" last="Rios"] (6’3" | East St. John)

[player_tooltip player_id="1130921" first="C’Zavian" last="Teasett"] (6’3" | Madison Prep)

[player_tooltip player_id="1275349" first="Semajai" last="McClendon"] (6’2" | Riverside)

[player_tooltip player_id="1130811" first="Jecal" last="Bryant"] (6’3" | Evangel)

[player_tooltip player_id="1285331" first="Dennis" last="Hebert"] III (6’0" | Catholic)

Even though Class B and C have begun in Louisiana, we are still previewing positions and other classes here on the Prep Hoops Louisiana page. This time, I will take a look at the shooting guards in the class of 2023. There are a few that the state, and college coaches, need to keep their eye on as the season begins.

Brandon Hardy Brandon Hardy Brandon Hardy 6'4" | SG Zachary | 2023 State #234 Nation LA (6’4" | Zachary) - I am not going to say he burst on the scene because I do not get down south all the time.

Corey Skillman Corey Skillman 6'4" | SG Brother Martin | 2023 TX (6’4" | Brother Martin) - Skillman has improved from his freshman campaign a great deal.

Robert Youngblood Robert Youngblood 6'3" | SG Dutchtown | 2023 State LA (6’3" | Dutchtown) - Youngblood has been a "3 & D" player since he put on a Dutchtown or LivOn Fleur-de-Lis uniform.

Courtney McCarthy Courtney McCarthy Courtney McCarthy 6'5" | SG Richwood | 2023 State LA (6’4" | Richwood) - McCarthy will probably transition to more of point guard during the season because he does know how to handle the rock. When he plays off the ball, McCarthy is a monster on the boards and attacks from the wings on the regular. He is as tough as they get at the two and is as versatile as any guard at that position.

Elliot McQuillan (6’2" | Port Allen) - McQuillan had a great summer for Showtime Elite shooting the ball from the arc.

Omarion Layssard Omarion Layssard Omarion Layssard 6'2" | SG Northwood | 2023 State LA (6’3" | Northwood-Lena) - Layssard is one of the most athletic two guards that we have in the Boot. His explosion to the rim is very impressive and if defenders are not careful, he will put them in the rim as well. Layssard has improved from three as well which makes him more dangerous. He is part of a dangerous 1-2 punch with Randarius Morris Randarius Morris Randarius Morris 6'4" | SF Northwood-Lena | 2023 State LA . Both players will be looking to lead the Gators back to Marsh Madness with hopes of walking away with a state titlte this time.

Devin Myers Devin Myers Devin Myers 5'10" | SG Levenworth | 2022 KS (6’4" | Huntington) - When I look at Myers, he is the prototype two guard.
