Hayfield was crowned the champion after defeating Fairfax Christian in a thrilling championship game.
Here’s a look at part one of the many 2023 standouts from the event. If you’re interested in watching the Finale in full, you can see the games on the CBG Live Network.
Justin Bass Justin Bass 5'11" | PG Kecoughtan | 2023 State VA | 5’11” PG | Kecoughtan
Bass had himself a weekend as he provided a step in for senior guard DJ Campbell who wasn’t in attendance, and he stepped up in a big way for them. A dynamic guard who can get to spots off the bounce and score it from multiple levels, Bass is very hard to guard off the bounce as he has a lightning quick first step, he can elevate and finish at the rim through contact and he can make shots from deep off the catch and off the bounce as well. He was very productive as both a scorer and on the defensive end as well.
Stylz Gardner Stylz Gardner 5'11" | CG Peninsula Catholic | 2023 State VA | 5’11” CG | Peninsula Catholic
One of the top scorers in the 757 last year, Gardner is poised to have another big year for a talented PC team that should be a tough out in the VISAA. His game is full of craft as he has a little bit of an unorthodox style but he can create space off the bounce, he can knock it down from deep consistently and he can finish in both the midrange and at the rim on tough shots. He plays with a toughness and is very consistent as a scorer and a playmaker as well.
Greg Jones Greg Jones 6'5" | SF Hayfield | 2023 State #258 Nation VA | 6’6” WF | Hayfield
Jones continues to show that he’s one of the top prospects in the 2023 class that does not have nearly as much collegiate attention as he deserves, as he can impact the game in so many different ways at his size and position. The 6’6” wing is a good athlete who can get downhill and play above the rim, he has great feel and is an excellent playmaker off the bounce who makes the right plays and he is a versatile defender who can guard multiple positions. He still has room to grow but he’s one of the most well rounded players we had at the Fall Series and was a big reason for them winning the Finale.
David King | 6’3” PF | Hayfield
King may not be the best prospect on this Hayfield team, but he’s possibly their most consistent and productive player with his ability to always be around the ball and around the rim and his high motor style of play. The 6’3” forward does nothing but produce as he scored in double figures in all three games, he’s a good rebounder and he can defend all 5 positions on the floor despite giving up height in the paint. He was named MVP of the Finale after his efficient 19 point effort in their championship game win.
DJ Holloway | 6’1” PG | Hayfield
Holloway is another important piece in this talented Hayfield lineup as he’s a super dynamic and explosive guard who can impact the game in a number of different ways. The 6’1” lead guard sets the tone on both ends with his relentless on ball defense and his ability to jump passing lanes, he can get downhill and play above the rim both in transition and in the half court and he can knock down shots from deep as well. His high energy and high motor style of play makes him very important for this group and was a big reason they won the CBG Finale.
Jordan Horne | 6’2” PG | Miller School
Horne is one of a number of transfers that came into Miller this year, and he’s looking like a very intriguing prospect moving forward. He’s a strong and athletic lead guard who plays with good pace and can get in the lane at will, he’s an excellent finisher in traffic and he’s a good defender as well. He’ll be the x-factor for Miller this year as they’re full of talent on the wings and in the post and he’ll be looked at to make plays at the point guard position which he’s shown he can do.
Sam Brannen | 5’11” PG | King’s Fork
Brannen is perhaps the most underrated guard in the 757, as he’s a highly cerebral and skilled guard that can make plays both for himself and others and can set the tone on both ends of the floor. He’s an efficient scorer who can make shots from deep and can get in the lane and score in the midrange, he has good feel and vision and he’s very good in the pick-and-roll with the ball in his hands. His ability to control the game and lead a team is coming together as he gels with this new group and he’ll be crucial in their efforts for a state championship this year.
