The 2022 rankings update has finally arrived and there were some changes made throughout. It is incredible to see how things have shaken up as this was a class that we saw from freshman year to now seniors. Here is a look at some of the top point guards.

[player_tooltip player_id="918901" first="Sam" last="Howery"]- St Mary’s #7

[player_tooltip player_id="918901" first="Sam" last="Howery"] comes in at the top point guard in the class following a summer where people were finally starting to see in detail the type of player he actually is. Coming off a tough state championship loss last season, had him out for blood all summer. Sam’s game seems to always go to another level when against top competition, which plenty of doubters have questioned if he is just putting up monster numbers due to being in 3A. He put those questions to bed. He is a true point guard that can score from all level threes of the floor when needed. Even with his added scoring abilities, that isn’t what makes him the elite player he is. Howery makes the right plays time and time again on both sides of the ball, but especially on the defensive end as he understands what to take away from opposing guards. He is arguably the toughest player in the state, has a competitive spirit and his high IQ and incredible vision is on display as he is a top-notch leader.

[player_tooltip player_id="1284473" first="Jaeton" last="Hackley"]- Douglas County #10

[player_tooltip player_id="1284473" first="Jaeton" last="Hackley"] was once one of the state’s best kept secrets but he has had his coming out party and going against him is tough for any guard in the state. As a sophomore he inserted himself in the conversation for best guard in the state and he hasn’t backed down since. Jaeton can score the ball just as well as any other guard in the state and is one of the craftiest guards in the state. He has counter moves, reads the defense and gets to the rim at will. He plays with a competitive edge and with a chip on his shoulder and that is what separates him from the pack. Every matchup seems personal with him. He isn’t afraid to go at the opposing team’s best guard on offense and defense all game. Hackley is a finesse player but cerebral and that high IQ will have him as one of the top watches all season. He is a top player in the state.

[player_tooltip player_id="759275" first="Quis" last="Davis"]-Denver East #13

[player_tooltip player_id="759275" first="Quis" last="Davis"] is an electric player and personality when he takes the court as he is just as loud as the plays that he makes. He’s consistently making plays that gets the crowd involved and the momentum stays with his team. Quis is a guard that controls the pace and excels in transition. He makes defenses have to guess with flashy passes and big dunks down the lane and is fearless when attacking the rim. Davis has elite athleticism and challenges bigger players at the rim and finishes well through contact. He also plays passing lanes well, sees the entire court and makes smart-reads. Over the summer he showed off a more improved jumper from 3, which should open up his game a lot more if he can stay consistent with it. Quis will be a player to keep an eye on this season as he will have the keys to the kingdom.

[player_tooltip player_id="1284577" first="Brayden" last="Maldonado"]- Smoky Hill #22

[player_tooltip player_id="1284577" first="Brayden" last="Maldonado"] is a high IQ guard that can get the job done with or without the ball but excels with the ball in his hands. He is a versatile player that uses his speed to score in bunches from everywhere on the floor and also gets out on the break and for outlet passes to generate quick offense. In most cases, Brayden is the best facilitator on the team which is a part of his game that goes unnoticed. He is able to light opposing defenses up while still being able to keep his teammates involved and get them good looks. As he goes into his senior year, he looks to build on a strong summer outing in hopes of leading Smoky Hill to a deep playoff run.

[player_tooltip player_id="618889" first="Tarrance" last="Austin"]- Pueblo South #32

[player_tooltip player_id="618889" first="Tarrance" last="Austin"] continues to shine as one of our top point guards not only with his play but how leads his team game after game. He is the state’s best kept secret and that is starting to change as he has been on a tear. Tarrance is an even-keeled guard that is never sped up and his team reads him. He has a pulse of the team and makes sure that things remain calm. Most of his best scoring outbursts come when his teammates are also knocking down shots. Tarrance has been a consistent weapon on both ends of the floor for the past two years and he plays well above his size. Going into his senior year, I’m excited to see what new changes he has added to his game as he looks to turn more heads and will look to make a jump in our next update.
