The defending Class B State Champions look like they will be ready to defend their crown. De Smet is the clear favorite in this Region and in the entire State. They are loaded with skill, talent, hard workers, size, and someone called [player_tooltip player_id="812196" first="Kalen" last="Garry"]. You may have heard of him, Kalen has been one of the best players in Class B the last two seasons. It seems like it is De Smet’s world and all the other teams are living in it. Castlewood is my pick for the #2 team in 3B. However, there are plenty of other talented teams and it will be fun to see the season play out. Read below for the player watchlist...

Region 3B Teams

Arlington Cardinals, Castlewood Warriors, De Smet Bulldogs, Esteline/Hendricks RedHawks, Hitchcock-Tulare Patriots, Iroquois/Doland Chiefs, James Valley Christian Vikings, Lake Preston Divers, Waverly-South Shore Coyotes, Wolsey-Wessington Warbirds.

Top Player in Region 3B

[player_tooltip player_id="812196" first="Kalen" last="Garry"] - De Smet

3B PLAYER WATCHLIST

(alphabetically ordered)

Blake Van Regenmorter (2022) |6-3 F| De Smet

He was a role player last year but still an important part of the championship run. Blake has the taste of winning and he will be ready to step into a bigger for the Bulldogs this season. Look for Blake to be in the starting lineup this year for the #1 ranked De Smet Bulldogs.

Braxton Saathoff (2023) |6-1 G| Estelline/Hendricks

He has the potential to be a potent player on offense. Braxton is a strong and athletic player. He penetrates gaps and goes at the rim hard. Saathoff finishes well around and at the rim. Braxton is also a gifted shooter that knocks home 3-pointers with a high percentage.

[player_tooltip player_id="963785" first="Carson" last="Kirwan"] (2023) |6-4 F| Castlewood

He had a very nice run with SD Attack in the AAU season. Carson knows what it takes to win and he should be ready to roar once the season gets underway. Kirwan is a top-notch athlete that does the little things you don’t see in the stat sheet. Carson is a powerful post & wing player that steps up to the challenge. He and Nielson will be a tough combo for the Warriors.

Carter Binger (2023) |6’0 G| Hitchcock-Tulare

He had a knee injury this football season and will be out for the year. He made this list because he is the Patriot’s best all-around basketball player. Everyone will want to watch Carter play when he is back for his senior season.

[player_tooltip player_id="968160" first="Carter" last="Comes"] (2022) |6-7 C| Waverly-South Shore

He averaged 10 ppg and 8 rpg last season. Expect those numbers to take a good boost in his senior season. Carter has a smooth finishing touch around the basket. I like the look of his turnaround baby hook shot. Comes is an impactful player on defense because of his toughness, strength, and rim protecting. He also passes well for such a big strong post. Comes understands the game and he makes the correct read. Look for this big dude to be impressive this season. I need to see this guy play live.

[player_tooltip player_id="963766" first="Damon" last="Wilkinson"] (2023) |6-9 PF| De Smet

He had a great showing in the State B Tournament and Damon has a sweet summer with the Pentagon Schoolers. The Bulldogs will expect a spectacular junior season from Damon. He is getting better every day and he is far from peaking. I saw him at the 250 Expo and he is more athletic than I realized. Wilkinson can run and dunk like a wing. Damon is a load down low that will snatch rebounds from the sky and protect the rim. Look for Wilkinson to dominate on the block and show great footwork with high-quality post moves.

Dawson Bury (2022) |6’2 G| Estelline/Hendricks

Look for Dawson to have a big senior season shooting the ball. Bury is a distinguished 3-point shooter in catch-and-shoot situations. Look for him to space and stretch the floor for the Redhawks. Teams will start to close out hard on him once they realize he is a serious shooter. When teams do that, Dawson can attack off the bounce and finish at the rim effectively.

Jack Boomsma (2022) |5-11 G| Hitchcock-Tulare

He has been playing point guard at the varsity level since he was a 9th grader. Jack has shown improvement in his shot every year and you should expect the same this season. As Jack goes the Patriots go, he is their leader. Boomsma plays defense with a ton of energy, this makes him one of the Patriot’s best defenders. Everyone is excited to see what Jack and the Patriots will do this season.

[player_tooltip player_id="1314147" first="Jackson" last="Maynard"] (2024) |6-3 SG| Hitchcock-Tulare

He had a great run towards the end of last season. As a freshman, Jackson scored well in the last 10 games of the season and he led in scoring in two of those games. Maynard has a knack for scoring and he makes it look easy at his young age. Jackson plays with confidence, something the Patriots have been lacking the last few seasons.

[player_tooltip player_id="1227929" first="Landon" last="Wager"] (2023) |5-7 PG| James Valley Christian

He will be the point guard for the Vikings. Wagner will be a big playmaker for JVC. Landon has very quick feet and hands. He handles pressure well and he does not seem to get rattled. Wagner sees the entire floor with great court vision. The speedy guard can also put up points from almost anywhere on the hardwood.

[player_tooltip player_id="963759" first="Landon" last="Wallman"] (2023) |6-2 G/F| James Valley Christian

He might be considered a veteran as he has been playing varsity for a few years now. Wallman is a pure shooter that will nail the shot if he is given a breath of fresh air. Landon is a student of the game with a high hoops IQ. Expect a high-grade season from Wallman.

[player_tooltip player_id="812196" first="Kalen" last="Garry"] (2022) |6-2 G| De Smet

Fans should recognize this name as he is the 2 time Class B MVP Player. This summer with the Schoolers, Kalen showed that he can produce against stiff competition. Garry is a complete player and competitor that he can single-handedly will his team to a win if need be. Besides, being a magnificent player on offense, Kalen is a great defender. Get ready for a blockbuster season from Mr. Garry.

Logan Peskey (2023) |6-1 G| Iroquois/Doland

His last season was shortened a bit by an injury. Logan will be ready to roll this season and prove that he is the real deal. Peskey is an excellent leader and a great outside shooter. He is an under-the-radar player that is ready to stand out in 2021-2022.

[player_tooltip player_id="968164" first="Payson" last="Gohn"] (2022) |6-4 F| Wolsey-Wessington

He is a strong post player that will be a force-down low. Gohn looks to be a serious rebounder. He scores most of his points around the basket with high percentage shots. After watching some film on him, Payson is a gifted shot blocker. He is very patient and he goes straight up without fouling. I would not be surprised if he is a double-double guy this year with points and rebounds.

[player_tooltip player_id="812211" first="Rett" last="Osthus"] (2022) |6-0 G| De Smet

A super quick PG that will be ready to lead the Bulldogs to many more W’s this season. Osthus is an exceptional on-ball defender that will make many ball-handlers frustrated. Rhett sees the floor well and he always finds his open teammates. He runs the show for the Bulldogs and he directs the traffic. His shooting range extends beyond the arc and Osthus can score off the dribble. It is going to be a fun year for Rhett and De Smet.

[player_tooltip player_id="968167" first="Ryker" last="Erstad"] (2022) |6-1 G| Arlington

This 3-year starter averaged 21.3 ppg, 3 apg, and 5 rpg last season. Expect a monster senior year from Ryker. He is a long 6’1 which aids Erstad in getting deflections and steals on the defensive end. On the offensive side of the ball, Ryker can score at all three levels. This will force defenses to pick their poison and Ryker will take advantage. I have Erstad high on my list of players to watch this season.

[player_tooltip player_id="963797" first="TJ" last="Salmen"] (2023) |6-6 F| Hitchcock-Tulare

He led the Patriots in scoring last season and I would expect that to be the same this season. TJ is getting bigger/stronger and his shooting is improving immensely. If Salmen improves on the defensive end he has the chance to be a complete player. Once his confidence gets rolling, TJ could be a scary player. Look for Salmen to have a great junior year.

Tobias Arbeiter (2023) |6-0 G| Iroquois/Doland

He is a gifted athlete with great endurance. Tobias was a State Qualifier for Cross Country this season. Arbeiter is a superior leaper that can jump out of the gym. His athleticism makes him a tough defender. It will be fun to see where the Chiefs fit into the Region this season.

[player_tooltip player_id="968174" first="Tory" last="Holland"] (2022) |6-3 SF| De Smet

He is physically tough, energetic, a hustler, strong, a competitor, and a stud athlete. In the summer Holland improved and extended his shooting range. Tory is skilled and well-versed in all aspects of the game. He is great on defense with taking care of his assignment but also at creating turnovers. When games get close, expect Holland to make a play for his team. Tory is also a reliable rebounder. He is no stranger to winning.

[player_tooltip player_id="968158" first="Tristan" last="Nielsen"] (2022) |6-1 G| Castlewood

His AAU coach for the Schoolers called Tristan "Mr. Clutch". Nielson is a playmaker and a big shot maker. He has the ability to erupt for 30+ points in any given night. Besides being a big scorer, Tristan is a hardworking defender. He can really shoot it from beyond the arc and Tristan has a smooth pull-up game. He is a gamer and will do whatever it takes to win. Tristan is without a doubt one of the best guards in the Region.
