Preseason 1A Player of the Year: 2022 [player_tooltip player_id="682273" first="Austin" last="Hilmer"], North Linn

Great arguments could be made for a number of players in the class, but we’ll side with Hilmer here, who leads a Lynx team that we project as the top team in 1A this season. His ability to impact the game on both ends of the floor with his athleticism, quickness, and talent is a major key for why North Linn can play the frenetic style that they thrive in.

The best player on the team that we expect to be the best in 1A this season, Hilmer impacts the game at a high level on both ends of the floor. The Upper Iowa commit is a lightning-quick guard who flies all over the court defensively, gets into the paint routinely, and he’s an excellent passer with a great feel for the game. His 208 assists last year trailed only Janesville’s [player_tooltip player_id="1158458" first="Leo" last="Dodd"] in the state (209), and his 97 steals ranked seventh.

2023 [player_tooltip player_id="956871" first="Blaise" last="Porter"], New London: 22.4 points, 4.2 rebounds, 4.9 assists, 2.3 steals, 52.5 FG%, 41.1 3P%, 74.5 FT%

Arguably the most talented player in the class, Porter holds Division I offers from Bryant and IUPUI. A quick lead guard who can fill it up from all three levels in a hurry, he’s equally comfortable using his quickness and physicality to get to the rim for finishes, or pull up and bury 3-pointers in the defender’s face. He has the ball on a string and is a great passer who loves to get his teammates involved.

2023 [player_tooltip player_id="956881" first="Keaten" last="Bonderson"], Gehlen Catholic: 20.4 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.7 steals, 58.8 FG%, 40.5 3P%, 74.7 FT%

Another dominant two-way lead guard, Bonderson is a highly efficient scorer who finishes above the rim in transition and gets others involved. His 59-41-75 shooting splits as a 6-0 guard show just how dominant he can be with his quickness, talent, and athleticism, and he does a great job playing the passing lanes on the defensive end of the floor. He'll be the focal point for a Jays team looking to break through and make it to their first state tournament since 1983.

2023 [player_tooltip player_id="956875" first="Daniel" last="Tobiloba"], Grand View Christian: 10.0 points, 15.9 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 1.1 steals, 4.9 blocks, 72.3 FG%

Tobiloba’s offensive game is still a work in progress, but the impact that the 7-0 junior makes on the defensive end and on the glass is enough to get him a spot on the first team in 1A. With his size, length, and athleticism, it’s nearly impossible to score against him in the paint, especially at the small-school level, and unlike some of the former GVC bigs, he does a great job staying out of foul trouble. Rather than taking chances to block shots and pick up cheap fouls, he realizes that he’s bigger and longer than everyone, and stays on his feet to avoid the touchy foul call. If he can develop his offensive game, watch out.

2023 [player_tooltip player_id="1167687" first="Brayden" last="Lund"], AHSTW: 17.6 points, 7.6 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 2.2 steals, 1.1 blocks, 64.6 FG%, 43.8 3P%

A 6-4 combo forward who can score at will on the block and also stretch out to the arc and make teams pay from deep, Lund leads a Vikings team that we have ranked #2 in the class to open the year. He controls the glass and the painted area on both ends of the floor, has excellent hands, and his all-around scoring skillset with his size makes him a very difficult matchup.
